I got Avast's free trial a while back, will go ahead and buy the full version next week. I love the crazy voice that tells me the 'Virus database has been updated' or something like that.;)

I was copying some data from an external drive, and sirens went off, and it prevented me from getting a trojan! I like this program. :D

i've been using the free version avast for about a year now.

i was at the pc one day last week and On-Access Scanner detected a trojan.

the alarm went of and screamed " VIRUS DETECTED".

i swear i must of jumped 3 feet in the air:D it scared the life out of meroflmao

it was the first time it had detected anything in all that time so i wasn't expecting to hear the voice scream at meLOL.

so be warned! if you have a weak heart, dont keep your speakers up to loud:D

Same here, just installed it a few days ago to replace AVG since I did not like the new version 8 that came out. I love Avast, it is really a great program and I feel safe with it. It was scanning some archives and all of a sudden the alarm & voice went off, you are right, weak of heart be careful :D. I almost jumped out of my seat. Well, it turned out to be a false positive and was corrected on the next update, but the alarm did get me.

Love this program, will be buying the full version soon since the free version will not let you schedule scans to take place a certain time.

    Have a good day,

I've got to through my vote in, too. Been using it for about 3 weeks and liking it.
I discovered the voice .wav's in the folder and played the virus warning, LOUD, while my wife was at her PC. No heart attack but I got plenty of "The Look". (especially after playing it a couple of times. LOL

I was using the pro version of internet security (AVG) and went to their site, there was the up^grade page, entered my old 7.5 serial number and they gave me the new version 8 serial number. It will not update or upgrade through the AVG program. When I installed that is when all the problems began. They talked about a "security toolbar", it was yahoo, then it would not update right, kept getting errors. Then with the first scan in the first 2 minutes it found over 190 threats on my computer, large panic, quit the scan went to several online scans, clean, uninstalled, reinstalled 7.5 and everything was clean. Then their new scan tools in the browser, just slowed down my internet to a crawl and I have an 18 meg connection.

Since my AVG was going to expire and I was going to have to pay, I decided version 8 wasn't worth it. They have managed to bloat a good product to the point on non use for me.

Tried Avast and will not look back or go back.

    Have a good day,

Avast is one of my favourites, since moving from AVG ages ago. Being a cheapskate I use the Free version. I would be interested in knowing what the $$$ version provides, over and above the Free version.

The free version does all I need (I think). :D

Registration, for key, is no big deal.

    Bazza,

The big difference that I want with the paid version is the ability to schedule a scan. That feature is not in the free version. Here is a chart that shows the comparison:

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for the info, and the link, BTDT. :cool

I don't need to schedule scans.

I used to use Avast, but as even Major Attitude will attest to, it's the king of false positives.

Yup, Avast is a great product. With a little configuring, Avast Home Free CAN perform scheduled scans with the help of Windows Task Scheduler. LOOK

Another difference is Avast Home Free doesn't scan scripts, but it's not really a big deal if you use Firefox and block unknown/untrusted scripts with the NoScript add-on.
