    To quote from it.

Makes interesting reading, even for non-Australian readers I think.
Many questions, lots of answers analysed. Bazza

PS: Link for the 2006 Survey if you are interested. :D

36 page printout in Landscape mode, but well worth printing out for Aussie MG readers, IMO. Bazza

Good stuff Bazza.....I have been with Internode for about 2 years (Inode) and a quite happy with them but find the service erodes slightly whenever any of these companies get on the bloody StockExchange....but they are still pretty good.

    Hi Bazza.

Just had a look at the survey today. 4 points of interest I note.

1 - paying for the internet with cash - is now very old fashioned.

2 - people tend to make choices based upon recommendations from friends and what they read in technical forums, rather than advertising.

3 - highest sector user - is student

    4 - average age of majority users is between 31 - 40. Gee I suddenly feel very, very old. :( :( Paramonks:tired

A few things stood out to me in being, that the folk who replied are in the majority of 30-40 age group and all working in IT as tech Gurus! ( Students a little bit of a given as they likely all have BB via Uni ) Survey doesnt seem to account for the new and novice users.

Reliability, Stability and Quality seem OK for the majority of users, which is a good trend. With West-Net seeming to me to be the best for customer service, dont know their coverage of AUS, so they could be a smaller ISP hence better service than the larger ISPs.

Interesting one in that customers using Telstra and Optus seem to stick with these ISPs, where as all the other ISPs seem to pick up migrating users/users who swap ISPs on regiular basis. Could just be that those two are the predominent players who capture new users.

Internet filtering from the Gov? without reading up on this and you Aussies will be able to tell me more about this. Is it that your Gov wants ISPs to filter specific words/content out of your searches etc at source? if so I dont like this trend, eeeks of N. Korea and China methods to limit folks free speach and ability to view whatever content they want.

So Bazza whats your take/feedback on this Survey?

Halo, Telstra and Optus are the 2 biggest Telecoms in Australia. I refused to deal with them for Broadband as their terms, speeds and conditions were not for me (to be kind :-D ). Most newcomers don't do their homework and sign up with their phone providers. (These 2 mainly). The survey appears to say different, but noobies have never visited / don't know of www.whirpool.net.au

Telstra's latest advertising wants you to sign up for 3 years,(you have to be kidding--what advantages / changes are likely to occur within the next 3 years), are still too expensive per month but I haven't checked out their speed options lately. They have improved their speed options, I believe)

Westnet have a great recommendation for service. Although they have a node here in Cairns, I wasn't too impressed with their plans at the time.

Spin /Comcen (same mob) were the best in price/speed/plan conditions when I joined in June last year, for me here in Cairns. Situation may have changed in the time since then, and someone else may emerge as a better option.

http://whirlpool.net.au is the best site for Aussies to check out the latest Aussie broadband plans, IMO.

Halo, Bazza is right about Telstra and Optus being the 2 biggest players in the market place. Twenty years ago all Australia had was Telstra and then about 15 years ago Optus appeared on the scene as a competitive telecommunications player. An important part of the web-link bazza has posted is the users forums. With both of these Telecommunication giants having been established in Australia for such a long time, listed on the Stock Exchange, and established a large market base (due to their length of time in the market) they now function without an outright arrogance in the marketplace. The user forums from those who have done their homework and previously used either of the above 2 write some absolute horror stories about the quality of the products and service they both provide. I remember one in particular from a Tesltra user where the user was offered a 2Gb package and then every Mb was charged after they had used thr limit. Telstra was charging for uploads as well as DL's and the user had thr Grandchildren come for the weekend, use the internet, at the end of the month the received a ~$1,000AUD bill.

Sadly too many don't do their homework or are too old and have a mis-guided sense of loyalty to either of these 2 giants and pay very high prices for very poor products and service (20min service call waits with Optus and then you speak to someone in India with impaired English). They really exploit the customers and then justify their actions on Stock Exchange and remaining competitive.

If you got bored goto the links Home page and then search the forums for either of the giants and read some of the horror stories, it is really sad to see they get away with such unethical behavior in these modern times.

    Well put, bold eagle. :-D

I just checked out one of the providers that had a great plan in 2006. Now with the demise of another provider in that town (Townsville) last year, that original mob has upped its' monthly price, for an inferior plan, by over 200%.

It really does pay lots of $$$$ to do your homework first (that applies to anything to do with with computers). Bazza

Cheers guys for the info, yes similar things happen in the UK, with at one time British Telecom ( BT ) being the only player, now its all wide open with some good ISPs and some really bad ones.

I switched from what was at first a good ISP in Freeserve, they were taken over by Wanadoo, wasnt great but service was fine, then taken over by Orange and thats when the "future was not bright", service was terrible, especially after an alledged upgrade, more like downgrade then the support were just not helpfull in trying to resolve the issues, so I went to a new-ish player in the field of ISP in O2 ( major mobile network ) and everything is perfect, faster speeds, no major connection issues and free support calls 24/7 to a CS in the UK.

    Blogged story here

Yes indeed really pays to do home work, but sadly many are just not savvy enough when starting out to think of looking for alternatives to the BIG players, the ones who advertise alot.

Holy :crap!:eek I have a 20/10GB contract and they charge $8 CDN/GB, prorated to the MB, after that and everything is clearly spelled out in the contract. That is highway robbery if you ask me, Telstra should be taken to court for that kind of behaviour. Totally disgusting!
