So far the best compression program that i found is called alzip you can get it fromhttp://www.soft32.com/download_76265.html there is link there if you want to buy the full version with is $20.00 but the free version works fine for me.:) what is the best one you found?

Also liked TugZip, but it recently made the major flaw hit parade, so I'll stick with IZarc. People also seem to like ZipGenius, but it seems awful bulky for just a file compressor. Unless the difference in compressing results is substantial, I can't see paying for one when there's some fine free alternatives.

Me too Star, I wouldnt pay for one now, not especially in the broadband and mass media storage age, not a great need these days unlike when 14400baud modems where all the rage!! but this is my opinion as I tend if I know who the files are going to compress if I dont have too.

    But favs are

    7zip
MS zip ( works! and built in to ME/XP)
ZipGenius ( have to agree while I do have it installed on one pc its file size is large but the files do come out compressed in a similar size to all the others )

    WinRAR is great but retail.

Would check the one you suggested Hugh, but as the original makers home page is unavailable I will pass, as I do not download anythng off 3rd party sites unless they have a known rep!

The older versions of WinRar are free, aren't they? Also, Filzip is a nice Zip program.

WinRar free, old versions ... not that I have found but some members here have... just wish they would give me the version and location to download as that would be most helpful :)

not tried filzip.... must do that.. muchísimas gracias! :D

WinRar has never been free, and I know that because I've been using it from day one.

I've also never seen or heard of it bundled with hardware or OEM etc, so that just leaves piracy as the most likely.

I also have thousands of magazine CD's with heaps of free programs that are normally shareware, but never WinRar.

I've got it on 2 of my computers at work, something like version 2.7; they've been on those systems for so long that if they want registration, they've asked for so long they just flat quit asking. I may be wrong and the gov paid for them, but I believe they were freeware. And you know me, I go after warez with napalm ;)

How much is a "heap"? :D

    That ain't worth 0.02 c. ;)

I can assure you that every version of WinRar is shareware. (I also don't use warez)

If someone has a link for free, legal WinRar, please post it as some of the members here would benefit.

I'll make it a point to check the versions at work Tuesday, and if I'm incorrect, you'll be the second to know (my psychiatrist has dibs on my mind melds) ;)

edit: I'm not confusing them with WinZip and its eternal nag screen :)

The only versions I have ever seen that are free is WinRar for Pocket PC.

All the others are shareware and have always been.

I'd love to be wrong on this as it's a very handy program, so again if anyone knows different and has a link, please post it.

hehe...umm....maybe it's WinACE I have at work

You know, if I don't see a splash screen, I tend to forget these things if I don't use them much.

Sorry for misleading, wasn't my intention.

You could very well be right and I'm wrong.

Wouldn't be the first or last time. (Maybe for you? :D)

Halo gave me the perfect excuse the other day. It's the booze, it's not my fault.

Yes that's true, but it's a trial, meaning it's time limited. (30 days or whatever from memory)

We are after total freeware WinRar (read legal) if it exists?

The more I think about it, the more I think you are right; that's depressing :D

Anything involving Halo includes a booze reference ;)

And after some research, you are correct; all the versions of WinRar are 40-day trials, so that obviously is not what is on my work 'puters.

It could be WinRAR on your work computers...they don't stop working after the 40 days, and there are no nag screens either.

    :D

Wavetar, they do stop working after 30-40 days or whatever. (If there were no restrictions, what is the point of 40 days?)

At least mine do. Story of my pathetic life, everything stops after a while, then I have to pay for it. :)

Perhaps, but if they are advertised as shareware, we'd pay for them. My main computer at work has over $16,000 of paid software on it; $29.00 more won't make that much of a difference :)

Wavetar, if they don't stop working after 40 days, then what is the point?

No one would pay for them and they would quickly go out of business.

All shareware has some type of restriction, usually time or feature limits.

Because we should ALWAYS link this site if possible.

That is what pays the bills, which you and I and others benefit from.

We don't want people coming here, then going elsewhere when we have it.

And no need to be rude or use curse words.

You can still download through the official site via here, there is a mirror, not that it makes any difference.

No point that I can see, but that's how it works. The "right click" menu options (which is what I normally use) continue to work, with no indication the program has expired. I was wrong about the "no nag screen". If you actually run the WinRAR program, you do get a window stating the trial period is over & you need to either remove or register, but clicking "close" on it just closes the pop-up, and WinRAR stays open & continues to work with full functionality.

It works this way up until version 3.41 at least.

Its what pays for this might fine free message board you are on. Would you rather pay for a subscription to it?
