The 'click' has disappeared

Up until about an hour ago, when I was online and clicked a link, opened a page, etc, I'd get that little "ka-chik" click sound. You know what I'm talking about, in the Sounds menu it's called "Start Navigation". And for some reason, it's no longer doing it's thing like it was. The sound is still listed and active in the Sound menu in the Control Panel, and when I highlight it and click the play button, it still makes its nifty little click. What happened? How did it get turned off by itself? The only thing that happened recently was I uninstalled and reinstalled Media Player Classic... actually, I just deleted the mplayerc.exe file from the KLite\Media Player Classic folder because a bad AVI file messed it up. Both the AVI file and the faulty .exe have been deleted. Media Player Classic is know working fine after downloading it from Major Geeks, unzipping, and moving the .exe into the KLite\Media Player Classic folder. All my other sounds are working fine and at the right times, just the click has vanished. Not a big deal, but I miss it :cry It's hard to get used to it not being there....

Using SmartDefrag? Just a thought, other Windows sound scheme sounds working as they should so I doubt that is the culprit. No recent changes to the registry or the other sounds in the Windows\Media folder? Until recently I didn't run system sound schemes, a minor tweak for speed. I am now using Vista sound scheme on XP, change is good, sometimes Try chkdsk c:/r from the command prompt, and then run defrag.msc, or DEFRAG from the command prompt, sounds stupid, but a possibility.

I don't have anything to contribute to this, I just wanted to say that this has happened to me too:p

Nope, I don't use IOBit Smart Defrag on PC, just Auslogics Defrag and the built-in XP defrag, and I haven't defragged in about 10 days, so that can't possibly be it. I use FireFox3 for my browser if that means anything. Like I said, it's not a big deal, and I will somehow learn to continue, but it's just weird that it just stopped.... that the click just disappeared from my internet activities. It's still there when I open folders and when I cruise around my hard drive(s) and through Windows, but it's gone from web surfing. Weird.

Have a look in Internet Options under the Advanced Tab, there's a section in there for Multimedia and one line says "Play Sounds In Web Pages", see if it got unchecked or if unchecking it and restarting then checking it again and restarting one more time brings it back. That line is probably meant for music or website audio but it might effect your mouse clicks too since they're nothing but wavs anyway. Its likely that media player classic was somehow associated with your browser and took the sounds with it when it went, that is it was being used to play the different sounds. When you removed it, the sound association was lost and just putting a new one back in didn't reassociate the function. Perhaps an uninstall and reinstall of the entire klite package is in order, to get your associations back.

I accidentally ran across this page and thought of you, but it took me almost an hour to find your post.

Go to this page and read his answer, quite aways down he describes your problem and what he found:

If you have Real Player installed its worth a peek.

Nope, don't have (and have NEVER had) real Player on this PC.
I use Firefox3, and this isn't the same as it would be in IE6/7. There is an 'Options' menu on the 'Tools' button, but it has nothing for sound in any of the sub-menus....
I had a complete codec meltdown about 5 days ago, and I did uninstall and reinstall the full KLite Mega Pack and it made no difference. I still have no 'click' sound on the internet. I looked though my audio settings to make sure the sound scheme hadn't changed and to be sure that the 'click' sound was still installed. Everything was as it should be.... anybody else have any thoughts?

For the heck of it why don't you create a sound (wav) or use a small segment of one you have, and assign it to exclamation and see if that sound plays. Then if it does reset the exclamation sound to the default and see if it comes back.

    Heres one you can use:
    Code:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/166943199/doh.wav.html
    Its only 6kb
I used to use this for exclamation myself until it started to drive me nuts.
