When visiting certain sites, Yahoo Mail and eBay to name two, I get a message "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." which, annoyingly, has to be closed every time a page is loaded.

What is causing this and how is it resolved? Thanks.

This worked for me when I had the problem.

    1. For PC users, uncheck Use Passive FTP. To do that, open IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced, uncheck Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility).

    2. For Mac users, select Active (instead of Passive).

    3. In the server side, try to turn on TCP port 20 and 21 in your router/firewall.

It might be malware because it is two prominent sites.

Are you signed on to an account with limited or Administrator privileges?

If you are an Administrator try signing on to a limited account or enable the guest account and sign onto that. Do you still have trouble connecting to Yahoo and Ebay.

Hmmm...the plot thickens - opened the Guest Account, and the problem disappears. Return to Administrator Account and it comes back at both sites. Have run a bunch of Spy/Malware scans, but no positives. Would appreciate further suggestions.

It is malware. The guest account probably doesn't have permission to execute the bad code. To completely remove you have to go through the malware forum and start with the Read and Run Me First.

I have to admit I had a version of this this several months ago and simply deleted a couple of Startup items and haven't had any problems. But I reformat and do a fresh install of my OS a few times a year and I'm not too paranoid about security. The Malware forum is where you will get expert advice.

I used CCleaner>Tools>Startup and disabled, then eventually deleted, two items for (a string of random letters).dll. I also renamed the two .dlls in the System32 folder where they were located. There may also be an entry in Start>All Programs>StartUp for the one or both of the .dlls which would have to be deleted. Then a reboot. I believe SpyBot Search and Destroy was also capable of finding the .dlls it might be able to remove them but probably can't remove the Startup entries.

Again this was several months ago and this was a lazy way out. Check out the Read and Run Me and decide if you are willing to go through the various steps to post in that forum.

I see this on Facebook every once in a while when I click on a page and it tries to load, just figured their server was too busy?

Ran whole MG cleaning procedure as suggested by sachs2. However, problem remains, but with a new twist - it only happens in FF and not IE.

Re-installed FF over existing copy, but to no avail, message still pops up.This started a couple of weeks ago, and happens without exception on every visit to these sites.

    Scratch, scratch...

Since you did the Read and Run Me you can go ahead and post in the Malware forum. They can look at logs and see if anything looks suspicious.

That it is now only in FF is really confusing. Have you tried starting FF in safemode.
Start>AllPrograms>Mozilla>Firefox (safemode)? Don't know if that would make any difference. But it could point to a problem in FF. It just wouldn't explain how it could ever have affected IE.

Doofus did you ever find a solution to this problem? I've been experiencing the same problem for the last several weeks and haven't found a good solution to this annoyance.
    Thanks

No, not yet. I ran the M&G cleaning procedure, but then realized I missed a step. So I will have to run it again, then post the logs in the Malware Forum. Will get back when this is done.
