The driveway to my house is on a major state highway up here. Today there was a major accident right in front of my house. In the amount of time it took me to pull into the drive, put the transmission into park, turn off the ignition, open the door, get out of the car, close the car door, take the 5 steps to my side walk, then walk up the sidewalk 3 steps; a span of time no more than 10 seconds, a pickup truck ran into the backend on a stationary car turning in front of my house. No serious injuries on the part of the people involved. Man, if I had dropped off my wife 10 seconds later than I did, or spent 10 seconds longer before I left; I would have been right in the middle of that accident.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any. I was busy assisting the people involved and directing traffic around the accident.

Think of all the times this probably happens and we DO NOT know about it...we leave the highway and an accident occurs. We cross an intersection and keep on travelling and 2 minutes later there's an accident (if we're on vacation, we'll never know because we won't hear the news), ETC.

It would probably boggle the mind.

I'm so glad everyone is safe.

Oh, I know, but to have it happen in such a visible way, and in front of my house is spooky.

I'm sure! I've never seen anything close to what you've just experienced.

    Sometimes timing is everything.

Many years ago, groggily driving to work on a 2-lane road, a pick-up roars around me just in time to stop at a red light for a major highway, 55 mph speed limit.

I was muttering to myself as to what the moron thought he'd accomplished passing me to sit at the red light, when the light turned green, speedy took off, and WHAM... all of a sudden the road ahead was clear. Looked right, and another pick-up had run the red light and T-boned speedy.

As fuzzy as I was that morning, I may, or may not have noticed the guy that didn't stop, but it so easily could have been me sliding sideways. Ever since then, I LOOK before entering intersections. Trust no one. ;)

As a combat veteran, I know the difference a fraction of a second can make between life and death; but every now and then things happen that remind us of our own mortality. And it is just plain eerie when it happens.

I've personally had a couple of experiences that reminds me of that incident. Sometimes you just have to thank your lucky stars or whoever / whatever may be looking out for you. Life is such a fragile thing when you think about it.

After riding a motorcycle for 15 years, and hearing “didn’t see him, officer”, and while I don’t ride or even drive any more……I didn’t even trust my family and friends, to see me!……..I do ride a bicycle these days, and try to stick to bike paths…….wobbles

I know what you mean by that 10 seconds difference!!!!

One time in high school I was pulling out of the parking lot and I was tempted to jump out in front of the truck coming down the road, but....instead I stopped at the last minute and let him go by and then pulled out!! Glad I did, because after I pulled out behind him...we both made a left hand turn onto the next road, and then after he stopped at the stop sign and proceeded to go...a car coming the other way ran his stop sign and t-boned the truck in front of me (the one I almost jumped out in front of) going about 40 mph and both cars flipped and one of them died because his head went through the sun roof!!!

That will make you stop and think...being that I could have safely gotten out in front of the oncoming truck...but why did I stop and decide to let him go first!!

I, myself, am a firm beliver in destiny!!! And that I belive was just that playing a part in why it all played out the way it did!!!!

Talk about scary when you sit down and think about it!!!!

I've jumped out of C-130's going 150-knots at 500-feet with 300-lbs of equipment, in the middle of the night, not once but several times; been shot at on more than one occasion, by people intent on doing me harm; I lived and work in Los Angeles for a couple of years. I made a life out of cheating death; boy, I bet he's pissed.
