I have a new Asus laptop (X54HY) with Windows 7 Pro, and Office 2010 Home and Business, both 64 Bit. Upon turn-on, the startup process begins, and after few seconds the display dies. As I can not shut down the computer properly, I do the emergency shut down by pressing the power switch for several seconds.
When I turn the computer on again- everything is fine.
My local Asus support tells me that this is due to the Norton Internet Security that I installed on this computer. So I disabled the NIS, but it did not help.
    Will appreciate any ideas.

    Greetings, barelij...

    A few quick questions:

Does the machine exhibit the same symptoms when booted into Safe Mode?

Do you have a discrete monitor available? If so, try connecting and using that monitor - does the same thing happen?

When you stated that you "disabled the NIS", did you uninstall the program?

And, you stated that this is a "new" machine - is it still under warranty so that you could return it for replacement/refund?

    OK. Thanks.
    - I will try the safe mode.
    - I will try to borrow a monitor from a friend.
    - Regarding the NIS (This is the only program that I installed on this computer),
no, I did not uninstall it. I disabled the autoprotect function, and it's virus
scan at computer startup and shutdown. If I have to, I will uninstall the NIS.
I believe that this problem can be fixed without the need to return/replace the
    computer.
    Will advise any progress.
    Joseph.

OK. Good News ! When I turned the computer on (after it initially displayed a black screen), I got a scary red message from Norton that the computer is not protected because it was not updated for 8 days. I let it update itself, and part of the update it downloaded a 64bit supplement. (The NIS program that I installed has a liscence for 3 computers but is probably intended for 32 bit systems).
This seems to solve the problem.
    Thank you, my friends,
    Joseph.
