I know this is a common question but I've tried many of the solutions and am not really getting anywhere.

I have Windows ME, a Vmm32.vxd error, and not much msDOS experience.

The computer runs with Powerquest Boot Magic and the back up partition works fine but the main one doesn't. I was wondering if there was an easy way I could transfer the VMM file from the backup to the other partition.

Here are the issues I've come across so far.

    1. Am not sure if I'm typing commands in the right place. Holding or tapping F8 down on start up yields nothing with or without Ctrl or number lock. I've changed the BIOS set-up to USB for keyboard and there's still no difference. Then it goes to Boot Magic and of course then the VMM error comes up and typing after that just results in "Bad command or filename".

So I've taken to booting up with windows me start-up disk, "start from CD ROM", "Starts computer without CD ROM support". The screen gives me an "A:>" and that doesn't do anything so I've been changing it to "C:>"

    From there I've tried,

    2. getting to a copy of VMM from the other partition by typing, "D:backslashVMM32.VXD"

but then a blue screen error appears with "I/O subsystem driver failed to load. "...due to low memory or corruption.

    3. typing in cd:backslash windows. And then edit system.ini - that just leads to "Invalid filename"

    4. running scandisk by inputting, "Scandisk c:". Usually it gives the "invalid filename" prompt but the first time, it said , "file allocation table bad, drive C. Volume serial number...

    That was pretty scary.

    5. putting in, "cd backslash windows. And then del smartdrv.exe" but the standard filename error comes up.

    6. searching by inputting, "copy VMM32.xvd c:backslash windows." Again no luck.

Anyone have any ideas? Am I even typing in command prompt?

    Thanks for any advice.

I had Boot Magic and partition magic v7 installed on ME several years ago. These are my notes:
after Boot magic boots up, select ME, press enter and quickly tap F8 which allows me to go into safe mode.

Open explorer and go to C:\Windows\SCANREGW.EXE create a shortcut in the same folder.
Right click the shortcut, select properties and in the box marked target add a space and then
    Code:
    \restore
You should then have the path in the target area appearing as C:\Windows\SCANREGW.exe \restore
double-click on this to open and select a restore point to get your computer back to a point in time before the problem.

No luck there. I'm afraid it won't let me into safe mode. i just get the Vmm32 error message. I tried f8, f5, and the option on the startup menu. Thanks all the same, it was worth a try.

OK so do you think I could restore vmm32.vxd and \Windows\system\vmm32 files by using a backup from the backup partition? Both partitions share a D drive but the files in C seem to be different.

Other than that, the steps sounds great but I'm not sure how to get into the registry (step 1) as safemode isn't working.

Safe mode not working is a pain, as most of the instructions use it to get you into the system.
My guess would be there may be more errors with the system as yet not detected....

My advice would be to see if you can retrieve your important files( try using a linux cd like Knoppix... http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html or a utility like UBCD4Win 3.22 boot cd... http://majorgeeks.com/UBCD4Win_d5710.html
and doing a clean install if the above tool does not work for ya...

    or
Now may be the perfect time to try out a friendly Linux distro such as :
Pc Linux ( my current one)
    Ubuntu (most popular distro)
    just to name a few

    Happy turkey day

This might work but your command is wrong.
copy D:\Windows\system\VMM32.VXD C:\Windows\system (you might be able to do this from the command prompt rather than changing directories).
NOTE: before you start, boot up the working backup partition and write down the full path of the VMM32.VXD file; it might not be in \Windows\system but a bit deeper.
If that is the case, replace \Windows\system with the correct path.
