I'm sittin' here at work, waitin' on the clock. When all of a sudden a thought hits me....

There's about 50 P4 machines here that are idle 90% of the time....http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

    My question is this:

If I run the F@H console version as a service, will it work when anyone logs on, or just me?

Another thought--- Will it work when nobody's logged on? I doubt it, but if it would, wouldn't

that be cool. Man I could crank out the points then.....

If it won't work, then It's probably not worth the risk/effort of trying, but I'm gonna try it on a

few just to see what happens.......

Running as a service, it will run as soon as the machine starts :) The process starts under its own user which is logged on at startup.

Setting up to run as a service is simple! All you do is download the console verion, set it up, change the advanced options and tell it to start as a service next time, close console, restart... job done! Now, you can forget about them.

However, bear in mind that an idle computer does use much less power than a computer running F@H. With 50 machines that can really add to your electricity bill if you're not careful. To reduce impact, you can take the utilisation time down to 70% instead of 100%.

With a company that spends about 60-70 thousand a month on electricity alone, I doubt it'd even be noticed. ;)

Thanks Goldy, I'll get to work on it tonight.

    OK...

I've got five rigs running at work, just to test the waters...

Plus two at home, and possibly, if I get the time to work on my network, three more by the end of the week.

That's seven now and possibly ten later....;)

Looks like this is working pretty well for you, Bluepickle. Got anymore to add to the effort :) ?

    Keep up the good work!!!

Lots, it's just a matter of getting the time to add them under the radar....

The way my points have been looking the last couple of days, I think some might have crashed also.:(

You need to be careful -- that could be considered theft of service. Its not worth risking your job over.

Erm, yeah, I did kinda assume that you were legit and people who needed to know, knew.

As it says in the Sticky'd FAQs (or should do...) Stanford nor MG accepts no responsibility for problems arising from machines running F@H or users installing F@H without the owners full knowlege and consent.

I agree not worth loosing your job over some of the people at your work may not be as computer savy as you and think your putting a virus or somthing stupid as stealing company documents .

  10. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

    Its more than that.

If your employers don't know about it, when they find out their machines are providing a service which they arn't being paid for (computing out of hours), and they are paying for them to be doing this work, then they might get nasty.

Best case, they ask for all of the clients to be removed.
Worst, you lose your job and get taken to court for theft of service

FYI there has been a couple of folders latly that have been zeroed out because the people who owned the computers that were being folded on followed the links to Stanford and reported them. One was trying to find out how to get it off and was blaming Stanford I think was how it went. So besides loosing your Job and getting arrested you'll loose everything you've folded since the beginning. You will have zip zero zilch on team stats.

Boy that'd really put a damper on my ranking, huh?

Actually, before I got on here and read you guys' posts, I talked to the IT tech today...
He told me he'd never have found it if I hadn't told him. He said as long as it's not causing any problems and I can show him what to do to get rid of it, he didn't see any problem with it.

He did say, that I might still want to keep it quiet though as he didn't want everyone thinkin' it was ok to put a bunch of junk on the computers. So, I'm still a little under the radar, but for different reasons. And pretty much the only time I can access everything is on the weekends.

Mainly, I added the first few before saying something just to see how well it's gonna work. Now I got a thumbs up, or at least the absence of a thumbs down...;)

not to mention I only run 733Mhz, 700Mhz and a 600Mhz slocket/370 type computers, no fair borrowing companies computers, but alas I degress "all's fair in love and war"?

Trust me on this one. They've been trying to find a way for the last six months to fire a guy that's been stealing chemicals to make drugs with. But they can't agree enough with each other about how to go about it to get their facts together and get it done. I really wasn't concerned in the first place. Now since talking to the IT, and him giving the conditional ok, my concience is clear that I won't have any explaining to do if, not when questions are asked.

I was under the impression it was team effort. If this is going to cause a bunch of contreversy in the ranks, I'll pull the plug on all of 'em.

As of this writing I have 4 computers running at home, the slowest being a 1.2ghz celeron, and all running at 100% all the time, so it's not like I'm an absolute freeloader. I've got the computers at work throttled down to 70%, to keep em from overheating.

I'm just doing it for the fun (and it turns out to be for a good cause too). If I'm using unfair practices to move up the ranks in a group project with no prize at the end, can it really be considered cheating? If someone has found a way to cheat, it only adds to the team total, right? Unless, as someone suggested, I wind up getting zeroed out. Which wouldn't be a good thing as far as I'm concerned. But then looking at the whole point of the project, is it really for the points? Or is it for the research? I got in it for the research. I'm having fun with it for the points.

  16. rmsubasic

    rmsubasic XP-38 Spacemodulator

Hang in there and don't take criticisms to heart. You're doing what you think is right, helping the team (I don't feel cheated), and most important, you're helping with the research. Keep up the good work and know that you have supporters out here.

  17. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

Of COURSE its not cheating. Here, the aim of the "game" is to produce as many points as possible by any means. If you have access to more computational power, thats just how it goes.

In the grand scheme of things, the more machines we recruit, the faster the work is being done for Stanford and the more research that can be done, which is what we all want. In the bigger picture, team or user rankings don't mean anything. Whether you're running 1 700MHz PC or racks full of Dual Xeons, you're making a contribution and thats what counts.

The only cheating would be to make points without doing useful work, and that just defies the whole point of folding ;)

And the team members should supports each other, allbeit with friendly rivalries ;) As I said before, we're all working for Stanford, but we also want our team to come out on top :D

Bluepickle: Thats good, as long as he knows about it you're cool. Users don't need to know, as far as I (personally) am concerned, since they don't own the PC, they just use it ;) As long as IT guy doesn't complain to Stanford, you're safe :p

  18. Publius

    Publius Sergeant

I agree with Goldie... there is nothing "cheating" about having access to more computers -- in fact I would encourage anyone on the team to utilize all the spare cycles they can find, as long as they are'nt going to get into any trouble for it. I, for one, have the client running on all 3 computers I have access to in the lab (I did check it out with IT first) and if there were 50 computers here, it would be on all of them.

Move up through the ranks as fast as you can, and don't feel bad about it -- if anything, maybe it will encourage other members to look around as well. ;) :D

    Keep up the folding, everyone!!

Folding is for a good cause - I don't consider you cheating, but just bummed you aren't contribution CPU cycles to my <edit by cp> team </edit by cp>

Having said that, I'd echo what some other folks said about being "careful" about doing this. Anyone who fires up the Task Manager will notice this process chewing through CPU, and at my day job, the Google Compute page is blocked by the Corporate Firewall and I believe it's considered a virus or junkware ... which if it is not wanted, is a reasonable conclusion.

We seem to be getting along pretty well with all the new help we are receiving though. You might as well realize MG will never be caught and rejoin a winning team!! :D :D

In reality, wherever you are folding is great, as long as your folding. (though the loyalists here at MG know that among the folders, we are the best :) )

Ok, so getting back to the topic of folding....

mew2, I may or may not get a chance to throw one on for ya on Saturday. In the meantime, looks like I got rid of my tinkers (finally) and production's startin to look a little more promising. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Looks like we're adding several new users, but the trend line in our production look a little dismal.

just installed Puppy Linux hdinstall downloaded the FAH5 console followed the directions on page specified works like a charm, but sure ain't nothing like the graphical interface.

a question to the linux gurus : do I have to leave the terminal running to allow FAH5 to continue to run? , since the command I use to start FAH5 is -> # ./FAH502-Linux.exe

also I plan on learning to have it run as a service once I locate the instructions to do so.

Personally I've only ever done it this way, but it is possible to set the process up as a daemon (very similar to a Windows service), but don't ask me how :p

You can start Linux from your prompt and have it the only thing running, it will run faster that way. I've never run puppy but have run a half a dozen others. Do you have an automatic sign-in or do you log in then type #startx to get your xserver up?

  44. noprob

    noprob Corporal

automatic sign-in,seems this linux flavor logs in to root, then at the terminal emulation box uses busybox# which I then type in at the command prompt.

This flavor of linux really looks alot like win95a, tho I did create an ext2 linux partition for it and a linux swap file of 131mb.

odd tho how all this is under 60mb, must use some sort of compression/uncompression technique.

thx. for your all's help on this subject matter.

    -EDIT-

Oh! ok then I would kill the winx <instead of xstart> server to just have linux running, then at the command prompt I would type ./FAH502-Linux.exe
