Now I'm really cooked. Something has gotten into my computer and prevents me from applying my System Restore. What do I do? Am I dead in the water? I can't get rid of this thing. .

Fast, easy way. Reboot, press f8 after the first screen appears but BEFORE the Windows splash screen, just tap the key after reboot and a screen will appear, choose safe mode and your off.

ummm....... have you tried making sure you can actually use system restore? go to Start > Setting > Control Panel > System > then click on system restore tab and make sure the little check box beside "Turn off System Restore on all drives" is UNchecked. if its checked then you can't use system restore.
