Hi its me again the inquisitive the 14 year old army guy. i have yet another question....

as you know (obviously) your computer has a registary and i have been involved with two forums that both are about editinging the registry.

    first

    and

    second

but my question is what is the registry of your computer. how does it work and what cleaver things can i do with it. like i know i can fix errors but i dont know how unless i look it up. and i know i can change / create / delete things you cant (or sometimes you can) on windows.

is there anyone that can clarify the jargon on the side bar. ( the thing where you click all the folders and it shows another on underneath.)

if anyone can tell me more about the regitstry and give me stuff to do and cleaver tips. i would be greatfull.

    thanks UKARMYCADET.

P.S i know you can totally skrew your computer if you mess it up so i will be cearfull i just want to know about it thats all. :D

The registry is a gigantic hive of entries, configurations and settings that are made by the operating system, installed software or manually. When a program loads up and it has placed entries into the registry to store starting configurations, then that where it reads the info from to set stuff like GUI control state (check marked as opposed to unmarked for example). Granted, something like that is scratching the surface of what the registry does, but it's the general concept.

If you really want to learn the registry, put a box together that you can format on a whim , get a book on the windows registry and go to town.

Most of the registry books out there are very well done, but if you are already familiar with the registry, then you probably won't learn much. I didn't. :)

The site I learned alot (back in 1999) was http://www.jsifaq.com/
I don't like their site change, but it still is decent.

Good advice from Kodo. When I first joined MG's one of the members, Cashy I think, was building a system for his parents to use. I used those specs and built a system I could just play around with, it was really a big help.

I think you would enjoy it and learn alot also. :)

that is a much coincidence as my neighbor has just give me a vintage 133mhz computer to totally mess around with (he does I.T a job in university as a technition.) he also give me a box of old sound cards etc... so i will get it up and running (as it has no hd) and i will mess with the softweare. thanks for that and i will also get a book on the registary. oh yeh thanks for the website theefool its gr8.
