So my understanding the ipad there are 3 types 16 GB, 32GB and 64 GB of hard-drive space. All have built in wi-fi.

It has no USB ,no firewire ,no memory card reader or USB drive or flash !! But it does use bluetooth for transfer to desktop.I hear the google android may have a USB and memory card reader.

With the ipad you have to get apps some are free and some you have to pay for .When you get it in the store they give you very little apps.

And price is fixed so they will not come down in price.

What is your thoughts on the new ipad and new google android coming out soon? They are both tablets and are ready for people going to collage and university.

The battery life shory ,long or very long?

If you need to print, you might have to jump through some hoops to get a printer working on an iPad.

I haven't read up on the google android.

for printing on an iPad, see if THIS helps you.

In a perfect world, everythng would be wireless and no need for hardwire devices.

Note thomas_nuffan, I'm not saying it can't be done. I wanted to point out that a college student might consider something a bit easier to configure.
The first sentence says it all in the article
Personally, I think a college student would do better with a laptop.

agreeable. In terms of accesability and normalcy (meaning as in, "this is what I'm use to"). Though the thing I love about the iPad is it's lightweight and smaller form factor.

The only way I'd ever get an iPad is if someone gave one to me.

It's like a ridiculously large phone that you don't want to carry everywhere and if you can be bothered carrying it you can't use third party software, can't change the battery, it can't do half the things a laptop can do and it's unbelievably over priced, you can get a good laptop for the same price.

That's about all I have to say about the Ipad in general :cool

    Awesome piece of kit...

Agreed. It's amazing to me that Apple can come out with a large ipod the price of a laptop and have everyone scrambling to buy it. They really are geniuses.

I guess it's good for kids and watching movies. I've always thought watching a movie on your ipod was really odd since the screen is so small. If you are on a plane, the ipad isn't as cumbersome as a laptop. Otherwise, I'm not sure why you would want it.

My husband is getting one free from work. So, I guess I'll be checking it out.

oops and back on topic, I think I'd go for something not Apple for the same reason as Rikky stated in that the google pad and others gives you more freedom in what you do with it. Of course, I feel the same as far as Windows vs Apple, so I'm probably biased.

Also, I believe the other manufacturer's tablets are for full computing while the iPad is not.

    :-D

The midrange 32gig Ipad retails over here for £500/$780,to put that in perspective you can get an I3 laptop with an nvidia or ATI card for the same price,if you want a 64gb ipad with wifi which is one of the only reasons I can think you would want one your gonna shell out £700/$1100. for that price you could probably buy a TV and laptop,or phone and laptop.

lol...the first one is really good and pretty much true. I was showing my 12 year old the video just now and said to her 'that's all true you know'. She said yeah, but it's cool! She couldn't even tell me why it's cool. LOL

As far as tablets go, this one looks pretty nice for a couple hundred bucks more: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Slate-EP...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1294950639&sr=1-1

I was looking up tablets on Amazon and found this thread (even there you get into the Apple vs Windows stuff :-D) :http://www.amazon.com/tag/tablet/fo...orum=Fx10P1TJ5MSMHJI&cdThread=Tx3G0TG03355R75

Alot of people get it do to the e-books .People don't want to walk around with books and papers .

Also good for e-mail and internet use and some simple games.

If you into hard-core games or big on multimedia you need a desktop .

Not had time to deepdive into the versus type thing but a few things stand out:

    1. Its not an Apple, dont mean that in a condescending way but googles apps are not a tied into the "Apple" way fo thinking and the fiddly iTunes.

    2. The Xoom (likely others) has external storage as in microSD, this is really handy when transfering docs etc from PC to the device, although the Android OS doesnt support it "yet"... massive ommision if they dont add this support as its a winner over the iPad

    3. More ram as iPads limb 356mb over 1GB in the Android powered Xoom

    4. Xoom supports HDMI output.

Have a read of the links as more infos coming out all the time.

Do you think the ipad will come down in price when the other tablets come out.

I would have to consult my crystal ball, but odds are that when the new Android Honeycomb OS tablets come out that Apple may drop prices (they are not normally one to discount though), but to be honest I find these a waste of money, while they look good they are expensive and a netbook would be better and cheaper.
