    Hello:

What is everyone's opinion and or experience with the new Win VISTA o/s?

Would enjoy hearing what people are thinking.

    Thanks:wave

I like the eye candy, but the security is incredibly annoying. Almost every click of a button gives "Are you sure?" and "Do you want to allow user [yournamehere] to perform this action?" messages, sometimes twice or more. There's a way to get rid of it, but I haven't gotten that far into customization yet (I just got it from my school because of the MSDNAA). :p I might be just me, but I think it takes longer to load from login.
Other than that, I haven't been using it long enough to really form an overall opinion. My friend's been using it on his desktop for a media center since beta, and he's been really happy with it. Apparently being able to leave it on for a month straight without even rebooting and with no or negligible difference in performance says something.

Running Vista Ultimate (build 6000) which seems very stable and has many really cool features....I love this OS despite some peoples dissappointment at teething problems that all OS's suffer in development. Remember 98/2k/and XP.
You may not really see its full potential until you have spent a few hours having a good look around.
I think what ShockTroop is refering to is the 'User Account Control'.....Its an added security feature that is annoying at first, but you can become uccustomed to it.
Besides, its easily disabled through the control panel>User acccounts!

    Hope you enjoy Vista!

I ran the Betas for about six months and now I have Home Premium installed on my Desktop. The UI is beautiful and everything is very smooth. The new features are nice, especially the new search function. The 'User Account Control" that nitecrawler refers to really isn't a problem. It adds another click to some of the things you do, but it is a great security feature and it's easy to get used to. If you don't like it, it's very easy to turn off.

If you are into gaming, you won't be disappointed. Vista currently is lacking slightly behind XP as far as performance goes, but that is to be expected with first generation drivers. As drivers improve, gaming performance will also improve. I haven't had a game that I could play yet so I'm very happy.

And if you get a version with media center, you'll like the updated version over XP MCE.

My only gripe is the pricing/versions. It would have been nice if MS just had one version for a set price. I don't like all the set amount of features at a set price thing they have going on. However, with a clean install from an academic upgrade cd for $70, I'm not complaining. :) The install process was quick and smooth as well. A nice improvement over XP

    I'm getting there. :p

Yeah, it takes a lot less time to install Vista than XP, and the Media Center that comes with Home Premium and Ultimate is so much better than XP's. Now I just need a TV tuner so I can take full advantage of it.

Really? Because XP takes me 15 minutes to install, if that.

    Interesting.

    Nope. AMD 4400+ X2, 2gb PC3500 DDR, and a Sata 3.0gb/s drive.

It should be noted that the countdown that setup shows does not reflect actual time.

What?! Every computer that I've installed XP on took me at least 30-40 mins by my own time. Vista took roughly half that on my desktop.

I don't really care if you guys believe me or not. Maybe stop installing from burned CDs :)

Consider something wrong with your system if its a current one and a 5, almost 6 year old OS takes 30-40 minutes.

Of course, not all hardware is created equally, and will react differently.

    http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=7504 is an example.

By the way, that 39 minute countdown setup does hasnt been accurate....ever.

Blame your hardware manufacturers for not having drivers ready for Vista. God knows they only had several years notice.

oh drivers weren't an issue, Vista loaded all of my drivers up without me having to install ANYTHING, it just its idle memory usage is horrid... it used t o be 2GB of RAM if you were a hard core gamer... I can't even play LFS Without having to use my swap space, but in XP I can disable my swap space and play with no problems....

I just have SP2 slipstreamed. I have an unattend install somewhere, but have been to lazy to update it since SP2 was released.

If you are disabling your paging file, then you truly have no understanding of how Windows uses your ram. You dont gain performance disabling it, and its always used to some degree. Systems are now shipping with a default 2gb ram....in laptops with Vista. Its no longer a number for gamers.

I could also mention that the P3-550 at one point was considered to be mainly for gamers, and not neccessary for most. Remember Windows 98? Anything over 128mb was considered to be wasteful in most cases.

    My, how times change :)

Linux even uses as much ram as Vista now. Eyecandy doesnt come free, ever.
