Wow, it has been 6 months since I stopped smoking.

I feel better, and have saved a tone of cash.

Wonderful news. I am so happy for you.
I have tried to quit so many times, but just don't seem to have the will-power.

It is a hard thing to do and a great accomplishment for you.

Cat_W_9 and Gal1998, I recommend this website to you: http://www.whyquit.com/

It is not easy, but you must be ready to tough it out and quit. The website I posted seems a little 'cultish' at first, but I got a lot of good info from it.

You have to want to quit to do it. Just stop smoking!

I quit chewing on Memorial Day in 2007, So I'm about at a year, and I did it without admitting it for a while. I had an unopened can of tobacco that I carried with me for a week or two, and just fought myself from opening it. One thing you have to be alright with is that you never really quit, you just stop... you stop one day at a time. you stop yourself one incident at a time.. I did it cold turkey.. It sucked a lot. I shook for a few days. LOL good job all who beat the urge.

Good for you, Fred. I got hypnotized 18+ years ago, and threw a gold Dunhill lighter out the window on my way home. Haven't puffed since.

And, after 25 years of 2-3 packs a day, I rapidly got to where I could breathe again.

My COPD isn't nearly as bad as had I not quit. There's no free ride, but I know I would have been dead by now, had I not stopped.

Congratulations. Stay with it. It only gets better.

I know I need to quit again. My best quit was 8 months cold turkey, but started back up again when my grandmother died. I used to be a 2-3 pack a day person. Now I make a pack last a few days. I know it is that time again.

Going to check out that site and see what it has to say.... that and calling the NY Quit Line.

Time for a whole new day, before I have breathing problems.

Congratulations to Fred and everyone who has quit. It's been 8 years for me, had lung surgery in Dec 07 and feel so good now but it doesn't make up for the 10 or so years I was in and out of the hosp. and was truly an invalid.

Went to the NY Quits website (for any NY residents, www.nysmokefree.com) and signed up for the patches. My target quit date is next Saturday 5/24.

I am posting that here because the more I put it out there, the more I have to stick to it.

This isn't gonna be easy, but it will be worth it in the end

I keep thinking about it, but always find an excuse and promise tomorrow or at the end of the week.
I have cut down to 5 a day and hopefully get down to 2 by next week.

    Good on you FredG :celebrate

    Hey Auggie...

The problem is that Alcohol actually triples the addictive properties of the nicotine, making it harder to quit. That is why so many people smoke when they go out drinking, even if they never smoke any other time.

Interesting medical factoid for you all there :)

Today has been one great day! And thanks for the kind words.

I just left a small campfire in my friends back yard. Wow,good friends, grilled steak, lobster, a camp fire, and a fine Bordeaux wine.... There is just no way to go wrong with that.

I drank the same amount of beer when I quit. You have to step up to do it.

I get it now - stop drinking alcohol will make it easier to quit? Coffee has to go also as that makes me want to light up also.

When I was young, yes I was once, my doctor told me in order to stop smoking to take a drink. Now mind you these were the days when ash trays were in Dr. offices, everywhere in fact, this also was a man if your appointment was after lunch time he reeked of alcohol, did house calls though. Ah, those were the days

That is indeed very interesting CT, and I have personally experienced that 15 years ago when I had quit on one of my numerous attempts. I could easily understand it if one was drunk but on my first beer? Like someone else said, a coffee is bad too though I don't drink the real stuff anymore, decaf doesn't 'pull' me in like the regular java. BTW, I will not give up my brew or single malt, that's just asking for too much!:-D

Y'know MK, I know what you mean. We went to camp for the weekend and it was tough, because I would smoke a lot at camp, but I made it. It did make me think though, and I realized that I would actually miss the smoking. Not just as an addiction, but as a relaxing habit.

I think that i may keep the cigars around as I don't inhale. Not right away, but for future enjoyment

one nice thing about the patches is that I get to enjoy the nicotine while doing the things I would smoke after instead of waiting for the post activity cig :)

:dood Congrats CT! Keep it up. Remember, the first 3 days are hard. You should be over the physical adiction to nicotine. The rest is just habit and mind over matter!

    Keep it up!

I've realized that this is the true key. You have to want to quit to make it work. While I miss the pleasure of somking, I know I need to quit as I have a serious heart disese history in my family. That and loosing weight are my goals for this summer

Looks like you got the right idea CT! YOU have to want it. You can't just want to, or do it because someone else wants you to, you have to want it. It is not an easy path. You will thank yourself if you continue CT.

SO far so good... but I started the hacking up of the lungs today... I forgot how much I hate phlegm.

But I feel good. Afraid to step on the scale still, but will have to do it sooner or later. :)

On the plus side, while I was down at camp over the weekend, I started taking the golden retriever out for a walk 3 times a day or more doing the 1 mile big loop. Hoping that helps with the weight end of things, considering how much I ate over the weekend :)

I quit chewing http://www.smokersoutletonline.com/images/smokeless%20005.jpg a year ago last Monday. I don't notice any more walking around money, but I did put on some weight, which I will take, since I feel so much healthier.

I remember shaking and being on edge for a few days. I quit cold turkey, and had an unopened can in my pocket for a week, just to see if I could beat the urges, and did.

I heard once there is a possibility of cancer when you smoke but chewing is 100% probability
I may have already said it but once again congrats to you!!
