I had the same question a few yrs ago, and the last research I did was "Earth stations" (2 way satelite systems), and the $$$$$'s kinda made me loose interest I think.
You probably know more than I do, but here is a interesting web page, shows the possible gross, net, and profits to be made,
    your own ISP

I am sure there is a member here who can also fill us both in with a little more detail, good topic, good luck;)

P.S. I would think www.dslreports.com may have some good info also.

Simply put, unless you have alot of money it is not an option. First you will have to purchase a block of public IP address space, then you will need to have at least a T1 that usually run $ 800.00 per month depending on the Telco. People tend to think this all just happens when you plug in. There is so much beyond your machine. For example, say you bring a T1 into your home, now you still need an IP, and a router to route to the internet and most likely a server to handle DNS, DHCP, and WINS. My expertise is in the LAN/WAN area at not server or deskside, so there may be more needed on that end. But at any rate, what you are asking is not simple and quite costly. What some believe is that you need an AOL or such, well you dont! AOL is just an interface with fancy Explorer buttons and things to make it simple, your paying for convenience not for what you need to get to the internet. You can use Dial-up, DSL, Cable, T1 or any connection from any company and you will be online. Each of those solutions will give you an IP and DNS, Default gateway, etc. and your on, most will also give you an email account and if not use yahoo, hotmail, etc... Internet Explorer comes with ALL Windows systems so you have a browser. I'll stop rambling. Hope I gave you some insite...

good point rick, and thank you mr x. i did somew more reserch, and i found out how it all ticks, now in order to continue my quest id have to find out how to get my own back bone. i must admit at first when i thought it all up i thoguht all i needed to do was plug in a server then plug it to my router, do some code typing, badabing badaboom free internet for me. i still plan on getting to know this area a bitbetter though. I still might be the next aol, but that would require making a busennis, and being a 16 year old with not alot of busennis training or code-training, it seems at this time unfesable
