The US Essex is in Cairns for July 4th.

Being 6.10am , right now, on July 4th here in Cairns (OZ time), the US Essex towers above the wharf skyline for a week's visit, and shore leave here. There will be fireworks tonight celebrating American Independence Day and injecting millions of dollars into our Tourist industry. :cool

US warships a welcome visit.

FAR Northern business owners, industry leaders and police have praised the personnel onboard USS Essex and USS Tortuga, saying the US Navy's stay had provided an economic and social boom for the region.

About 3500 sailors and marines, 2500 from the Essex and about 1000 from the Tortuga, have spent the past week in the Far North, relaxing and enjoying the region’s offerings before taking part in a large scale military exercise.

The two ships depart on Monday at high tide, scheduled for 8.17am or 9.28pm.

The US ships Essex and Tortuga left Cairns last night (Monday July 6th OZ time). From various accounts the crew voted Cairns as their best R&R port.
