I saw it yesterday...was extremely excited, because I love Shyamalan and I think his films are easily separated from the rest of the horror crap out there. I am even a little hesitant in placing his movies in the "horror" genre. It seems like he incorporates horror into more realistic situations (not completely realistic, of course) and the fear he evokes from you is only overcasting the whole film's deep meaning. Before I see a Shyamalan film, I always, always expect something "different"; as in, it's not fully in-your-face-scary, and the plot ends up being something much bigger and more meaningful than just a freaky-looking monster. That's why I respect him so much. He provides a different view into the realms of fear.

For me, I can't flat out say, "the ending sucked"; or, "Why did I even waste money on this." It may not have been the best thing he could have come up with, but I loved the way he directed it. The plot was so-so...but the film as a whole was beautiful...Just like Unbreakable, whose story I didn't much care for, but the way it was rendered was nothing short of fantastic.

Shyamalan involves many elements in this film - a rather remarkable love story (as one can clearly see judging by the "porch scene" and the leading actress' actions), a sense of community, innocence, fear...But he always does that. Things are not always what they seem. I believe that this was definitely his most "realistic" film though.

Was I dissapointed in the twist? Yeah. Some will love it, most will hate it. Do I regret spending my time at the theatre watching it? Absolutely not. There were a lot of things in this movie that I just loved. And I can't wait for the next Shyamalan film.

Anyone else see it? Thoughts, opinions? :)

So far the rating on RottenTomatoes.com is 45%...not surprising at all. People just are hating the ending. I haven't heard from one person who was satisfied with it, but perhaps Shyamalan doesn't want you to be satisfied...that would be more than a little boring. He wanted a reaction, and a reaction he got. Too bad the reaction has been more "dissapointed" than anything else...

Good review. I really agreed with what they said about the first half hour...and some of the mannerisms and dialogue of the characters seemed strained and, as the reviewer said, "eye-rollingly solemn." I disagree with his opinion of Edward Walker (William Hurt), the town leader. I thought his performance was very strong, I liked him a lot. Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Adrien Brody were simply amazing. Bryce really lit up the screen with her acting. She should be very proud of her first on-screen performance.

Also, for anyone who's interested, here's an article before the movie was released. It's really interesting, and touches on doubts of the movie's success...not necessarily at the box office, we all know it'll conquer there...but in the hearts and minds of the audience. They also said how Shyamalan's movies (especially Sixth Sense) has raised the bar and it's gotten more difficult to provide definite shock. Which Shyamalan still offers to us in The Village, but...yeah, the twist is certainly a twist, but it doesn't really receive a shock-and-gasp reaction from the viewers, including me. More of a dissapointed, guttural "Oh." Nevertheless, there's something about its subtlety that I admire. Anyways, enough blabbing from me :p Here's the article:

Wow, great read. I wonder what that other ending was...It will haunt me for days

Damn you LLC, I haven't even seen Signs yet ;).

Got to rent it soon. I also want to make a list of all his movies and go back and watch the ones before he was famous. I think it would be neat to see how he has evolved as a director.

Oh, you definitely should. I loved Signs. If you find other ones besides Sixth Sense, and Unbreakable, tell me please! I would love to see his other works.

He has a few out there besides Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. They listed them on the Hoax special "The Buried Secret of Shyamlan" on Sci Fi. I didn't write them down, but you should be able to find them on his site. I would think so anyway.

Welll, gotta run and get the kids to bed. Was good seeing you :D

    *big hugs*

    Woo! Awesomeness.:)

I never did get to see that Sci-Fi thing...It looked so good too:( ah well, maybe they'll have it as a rerun? *crosses fingers*

So good to talk to you again Blues:) Hope the kids and everybody's doing well. *biiig hugs!!*

LLC, I don't know of any others by Shyamalan, but if you want to rent a decent movie in the same vein with a great twist at the end, try "The Others", with Nicole Kidman.

EDIT: I just noticed that when I read my own post. No pun intended, honestly.

    Hey Mr. Pewty *hug*

ahah! I've seen that one. I really liked it. In fact, I didn't really appreciate the end till some time afterwards, I guess I was pretty shocked, hehe.

I think one of the...most disturbing (I guess that's the word for it) endings I've ever seen in a scary movie was from the film They. Have you seen it? I dunno, it's weird, I have a love/hate relationship with it. The entire film was crap though :p

No, I never saw that one. I just went and googled the trailer. I'll give it a miss.

I don't know of any others, so try The Others.

I liked it, but it was unintentional.

Don't rent it or anything, wait till it's on HBO or something, if you're bored one night. If you don't see it, you're definitely not missing anything lol.

Tried to see The Village yesterday, couldn't get in so went to The Bourne Supremacy. Very thoughtful script for an action thrill a minute flick. Better than the Bourne Identity. Reminded me a little of The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. Damon was good as was the veteran cast. I'll see The Village next weekend.

I see there's a whole lot of watching for me to do, eventhough neither The Village nor The Bourne Supremacy (which I'm definitely going to see) is out here yet. Thank god for the internet :)

I've seen Signs and tbh didn't like it at all, the aliens allergic to water? yeah right, there's so much water in the air, on the ground etc it's just not very plausable at all. He should've thought about it a bit better imo :)

I can't make myself see either of the Bourne movies...if only because Matt Damon is so freaken stupid someone needs to hit him with something. He has NO IDEA they're both books, or that there is a third one (he said in an interview I saw that he normally hesitates to do a movie sequel because they're usually not as good as the first one, but this was such a good script he did it anyway). It's not a movie sequel like he claims in his interviews, it's a BOOK SEQUEL. Not only that, but the books were written several years ago, not just for this series of movies. (Bourne Identity was published in 1980, Bourne Supremacy was published in 1986, Bourne Ultimatum was published in 1990).

Sorry for the hijack/rant. Stuff like that bugs me a LOT.

S'Okay Sarge :) I've got a few triggers myself. Like: Disney movies; I really, I mean REALLY, hate when the title of a film says: "Disney's 20,000 leagues Under the Sea." I may be wrong but I think a guy named Jules Verne wrote "Leagues" not Uncle Walt. Or, "Disney's Cinderella" - folktale. or "Disney's Peter Pan" - JM Barrie or "Disney's Alice in Wonderland" - Lewis Carroll, etc. Grrr.

I don't know, I always took that to mean "Disney's Version of" instead of "Disney wrote this".

I didn't like it very much, but at least it was original instead of a copy off something else...

I didn't read this whole thread, because I didn't want to spoil it for myself, but I'm going to see it tomorrow night with some friends. One of my friends already saw it once and is going again with me. She said she really enjoyed it. Said that it wasn't as scary or suspenseful as she expected, but she enjoyed it none-the-less.

PS - Hi LLC!! *hugs* :D

Confused. Is this a remake of "Village of the Damned"?

  27. cindysnoopy

    cindysnoopy Shotgun!

    No, it's an original movie.

I really enjoyed it. I think I'm glad that I knew it wasn't going to be all that scary ahead of time. It helped me to not expect more and then be disappointed. It was really thought provoking for me.

On another note, the new Batman movie is being filmed here in Chicago. I think we actually happened upon it tonight on our way home just a couple blocks from our house. Finding parking was a nightmare between that and street cleaning tomorrow morning (which they probably won't really do, but they'll still give out tickets none-the-less (stupid city)

We drove by, but didn't see anyone famous or anything. Couldn't get too close in the car. When it comes out, I'll be sure to tell you all which scenes were shot right in our neighborhood :)

SWEEEET!!! I can't wait to see that one... if it's another Batman-camp job I'm gonna personally hunt the director & screenwriters down and subject them to countless hours of the most horrific thing I can find on a dvd. Batman & Robin ;)

People are disapointed in the Village because the Trailers and Commercials for the movie advertised it as very scary when it is not. It is more thought provoking than scary. It is a supenseful thriller.

I saw it two days ago. I thought it was slow paced just like Unbreakable and as a result it made the movie boring to sit through.

The ending wasn't much of a surprise to me. I kinda' figured it out before the final twist was revealed.

I would still recomend it to people who want to see a good movie. Although the ADD generation may not be able to sit through something slow and intelligent.

I haven't seen this yet, but the commercials did not really interest me. Some of my friends saw it, and didn't really enjoy it too much .. so I will probably only see it if I have some extra time and money.
