Thermal Compound

Hi, I'm replacing my old basic CPU fan for my Athlon XP 2400 with a Volcano 12. I know im gonna need to reapply the thermal compound, and i was wondering what are the good types or brands of thermal compound. Also, i know im gonna need to clean off the old compound, and i've read quite a few times that isopropanal alchohol is good. Where can you buy that from? And another stupid question, thermal compound can be placed on a Pentium or Athlon pretty much. Like you dont need a specific Compound for athlon and another for pentium. Ok, thanks.

if it's too pricy, go for the ceramique or anything else in the arctic silver line. Any type of white junk is just that, junk, so avoid them at all costs.

isopropol alcohol can be found at your local drug store. i recommend 99%, but try not to sniff it.

And also don't leave the top off it, or it'll evapourate

Personally I prefer Ceramique because I find it easier to apply, but thats just my personal perference.

Also, top tip : If you have a thermal pad (disgusting things that they are) try using paint brush cleaner to get it off, and then make sure you scrub it throroughly with some kitchen towel and isopropanol alcohol. I find this stuff works best for getting rid of thermal pads because it basically dissolves them! However, it will leave an oily deposit if you don't wash it off immediatley with alcohol.

 

Arctic Silver is the best choice. When i apply it i like to use a credit card, or another plastic card. It seems i can get the most control over the compound.
