I'm sorry to say I'm pretty sure I used way too much thermal grease when I installed my E8400 Core 2. I've done this once before now with this processor and wasn't happy with the result. I sure as hell am not doing it again. I know I used way too much, but there's no way I'm going in there to clean it off. That would be a nightmare. Anyway, depending on room temp, it's idling between 30C to 36C which isn't bad I guess. Never really gets hotter than 43C which is under about 50% load. What do you guys think? I use arctic silver.

Tip- If you are needing to clean the heat transfer silicon from a chip I always use petrol (gasoline if your on the other side of the pond) and a handful of tissues, it dissolves the silicon very well. Be careful not to bend any pins just handle the chip by its edges.
It's the best stuff I've found for the job so far and makes the chip look new.

I would never use gasoline for this purpose. Threre's no need to use a hazardous (explosive and vapors) liquid for this. Get some 91% isopropyl alcohol. You can find it any supermarket or drug store. Cotton swabs and Q-Tips are also very useful for this.

I don't know why you think cleaning if off would be a nightmare. If you decide to clean it and re-apply thermal compound, this guide may be helpful: Applying Thermal Paste. But, your temps are quite good so re-doing the application of thermal grease seems unnecessary.

    Hi All,

90% Isopropel (Spelling?) in some states can only be purchased at the drug counter.

I have some rubbing alcohol that says 70% isopropyl alcohol. If you have a hard time finding 90%, look at what all the rubbing alcohol bottles say.
70% isopropyl is safer than petrol/gasoline even if it contains a bit more water than you'd like.
