Thanks - Star Wars, Sir Alec Guinness.

So am I assuming correctly you are introducing yourself to the forums by way of suggesting the place is friendly to any and all comers while at the same time home to many different walks of life, from the super intelligent to the outright quirky?

If so... Welcome to the MG's :)

I'd like to claim that English is not my first language!

It just sounds like that sometimes:-D

    Laura,

I tried to send you a PM, but couldn't (I think because I'm new here).

Had a look at your photographs on deviantART, because I love photography too. I thought I was quite good at it, but your shots are WAY better than anything I've done...

Was worried about sounding "geeky" by asking what camera you use, but hey - this is MajorGeeks;)

The Spitfire picture was with a Panasonic FZ20. Now I've just bought a Nikon P500. Had a Canon SLR, pre-digital, but got fed up with carrying bags of lenses around. The Nikon's pretty good, but I'm thinking about getting a 2x converter for it, which kind of defeats the object!!

    hahaha...glad I'm not alone. :-D

Yep. You have to have a certain amount of posts to use the PM function. Unfortunately spammers like to use that as well, so we had to implement that to protect our members.

Photography is definitely a passion of mine. I love talking about it with anyone who will listen. LOL Thanks for taking a look at my gallery. I'm always appreciative of that.

lol...In spite of the fact MajorGeeks is primarily a Windows based computer site, you'll find many tech based interests here, including Photography.

I shoot with a Nikon D90. I started with the kit lens that came with the camera and have since acquired a number of different lenses I use. I actually have to carry a backpack when I go out shooting....along with lugging around my tripod.

Nikon's are great cameras as I'm sure you've found out with your new one. I'm sure you'll have fun with it.

I took a look at your gallery. You have some nice stuff in there. What a beautiful shot this one is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/martinmerlin/3092678086/in/photostream A gorgeous buck.

I totally got the Jedi mind trick although I am not a fan of the star war saga.

Hmm, never looked at it that way, I don't have or want a cell phone so old words like "Droids" still means "Robot" to me, guess I am an old fashioned... nah not nerd, geek, I can't be a nerd, I've never got a pen :-D

    Aha

    Droids <-> Phones

That pseudonym had not reached me in the darkest depths of England, where I'm stuck now.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, it had been bugging me for a while!!

    Wow - thanks!

I really like this picture too. Some people that I've shown this picture to
have said dumb things like "what's that a picture of?" - probably preferring to see a human figure in the foreground - philistines!

lol...yeah, well, what you'll find is that when you show your shots to people who aren't into Photography (with a capital P...as apposed to photography, as in snapshots of their loved ones), their eyes will glaze over in boredom. After the initial 'emotional' response, my eye goes immediately to the technical side of it when I look at people's pictures. So, when I look at your shot of the wooded path I see a path where I wonder where it leads to. You have it nicely placed so it isn't in the middle of your shot. You've started it so it leads the eye back and around your photo. Your focus is very nice and your exposure is as well (I can't see any blown out parts to it). So there is my amateur critique of your pic. LOL Anyway, that's pretty much what I look at when I see photography.

I've gotten into portrait photography a bit more, but I love nature photography.

Snapshots are fun too and as you mentioned, people do love looking at those and seeing themselves. :-D

    Thanks for asking that...

... I wondered too, but was afraid to ask because it might have produced a heap of "well obviously, it means this... dummy" responses!

I suppose that the people on here are "a better class of geek" though!

Oh come now Dyamond, if I never have a pen, why would I have a pocket pen protector?
That wouldn't be nerdy, that would be just plain stoopid :-D

Yes my reference was basically poking fun at the fact a "Nerd" ALWAYS has a pen.... me? I'm a geek because I can never bloody find one under all the various electronics parts laying around :-D
