They're leaving...

To go to university, and I was wondering how to fix it so they can access the home PC from wherever they are. We have an AMD athlon 2000, 512Mb RAM, and Windows XP home.

I hope to be able to buy a couple of used laptops for them to take, and I would like to set them up so they can access the home computer when they need to.

VNC/RealVNC/WinVNC is cool, but I much prefer UltraVNC (find it at sourceforge). It uses the same method as the others, but it allows for file transfer and http access! You can use any client or server with UltraVNC, but both the client and server must be UltraVNC for the file transfer ability. If they don't want to use that, they can use any random IM client to do file transfer as well (AIM, Y!, ICQ, Gaim).

To save you some time if they have a firewall: VNC uses port 5900 (5800 for http) by default.

Ok...this is from a few years ago, but when I worked tech support, we lived and died by pcAnywhere....

There might be better out there now, but pcAnywhere was perfect for us..
I even installed it on my parents computer so I can help them out when needed....

PC Anywhere is great. But VNC in all it's flavors is free and is good enough. PC Anywhere might be better for a corporate environment (especially tech support), but you can't beat free.

 

Good point... it was in a corporate environment...
well...except with my parents, but I had a source for the software!
