Think some of today's machines will be able to play Half LIfe 2/Doom 3 on high?

I.E. would a Radeon 9700 GFx card be obsolete for these games, or will it be powerful enough to run them on high settings/1280x1024 resolutions? I heard there was a leaked alpha of Doom 3 and was curious if any benchmarks were run on it, and if the benchmarks actually reflected anything since it isn't optimized yet

I should think an ATI 9700 Pro, or an 9800 Pro should handle this game with no problems. Likewise for the GeForce FX. Other system components would play a role in this as well so asking if the card can do it all by it's lonesome is kinda sorta unfair. But, yeah, they should do the trick. Also you're talking about an Alpha leak, so the finished product will most likely sport a few optimizations and tweaks that will allow for greater gameplay to more consumers. Face it, not everyone has a top of line graphics card and game makers do keep this in mind, to an extent, when designing games.

Yea, I think that top of the line hardware today would be able to support top of the line software of tomorow, even when the hardware would become average by then....My original GeForce DDR has lasted me up until now, but i think when HL2 is released it is time for a new Vid. Card :) (that game is gonna be the shizznitt)

    I beg to disagree.
Games often are unplayable at higher rez on the hardware available when they are released.
Unreal was often dubbed "Unreal System Requirements" when it came out, especially for the Mac.
Dungeon Siege is tough to run at high resolutions and FSAA x 4, as is Morrowind.

Doom3 is being produced for hardware that is not available yet. It may run fine at 800 x 600 with the present hardware, but if the alpha is any indication, the hardware to run 1600 x 1200 at 4x FSAA is still 6 months to a year away.
