So, I have an older Dell laptop, I think 3Gig RAM, Dual Core Intel of some type, but it is buggy with XP. I don't want to buy Win 7, and I don't use it for much, so thought about trying a version of Linux on it. Currently downloading Ubuntu 16.04.3 onto a flash drive.

Any other distros I should look into? Intended uses of the laptop would be internet browsing, maybe watching a Netflix show, nothing fancy. Been a while since I messed with any alternative OS, so curious what the popular ones are these days.

Thanks Dr. M! I am updating the Ubuntu... Seems kinda sluggish. I had a 120 GB SSD drive laying around, installed it on that drive. Slow to boot... May try some other distros.

Im a Kali fan at heart, with all tools available, https://www.offensive-security.com/
    Runs fast on a 4g (i5) oldy.

Currently running Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" Cinnamon Edition in VM which seems to run slick and is fun!

Mint and Majaro seem to be the most popular for the past year.

My current favorite is way down on the charts, LXLE Desktop.

I like it because it comes with 100 really nice desktop wallpapers. Yup, a gal who wants to decorate. :p
It works on older hardware. I have a 7" eeepc purchased 10 years ago last month. It only has a 4GB ssd so I can't install a modern distro. The live linux sticks allow me to use it safely on the internet. With persistence, any changes I make are saved to the stick so I can pick up where I ended with my last live session.

LOL< I will need the youtube or something for Kali, kinda lost, but that is half the fun, it is not a critical computer, so If it takes me time to get it to do something, no problem.

I would try again if there was a linux that shared like win98 on my lan with W3.11 ,NT, XP, 7, and W 10.
A wide open distro that I would have implement all the sharing precautions myself.

You could always try the Linux in a Virtual Machine- I find it works well in Oracle Virtualbox, installed in Windows 7,or, Windows 10

Yes dual booting is s000 90's....... distro's seem to run well in Vbox, only what i have tested. (Kali, Mint, Debian, Ubuntu).
If you have the hardware, then no drama's. :)

When talking about wanting to be able to boot to multiple Linux distros or Windows versions I can only agree. Virtual machines are the way. However using a boot manager that can boot bootable CDs/DVDs is an absolute must in my book. I use EasyBCD to give me the option to boot imaging programs (Macrium and Acronis), disk management software (Partition Wizard), mini-OSs (WinPE) and my favourite bootable Linux, Puppy, and I can't imagine a system without this capability, though I'm sure there must be equally good alternatives.
