I am thinking of buying a full SSD.
I currently have a hybrid SSD (3 gig SSD + 500 gigs) but now I am thinking of a 64 gig, or 128 gig, full SSD, Kingston brand.

Some info that may help me, and you, decide.

What experiences have you had with SSD, USB 2.0 :cry I'd like to know.;)
I don't need a drive in excess of 120 gigs, probably.

Keep in mind, they only have a finite amount of read & writes. It comes down to how much space are you using with the current hard drive that you have. Best type of machine that they are great for, are Netbooks & Laptops. Desktops are the one area that I would stick with a regular platter SATA drive, until the costs come down on the SSD drives.

You'll probably be using a different computer in 10 years time.

If I had the money to spend on an SSD, I'd go with a RevoDrive.

PICe x4 blows away SATA III, only issue is if your mobo will boot over PCIe.

    :cool

Just finished upgrading, and building Mom a new PC with my previous hardware. Hers was S-L-O-W. We're talking PC-3200!

    :eek

This is pretty wild, and pretty EXPENSIVE!!!!

I could see it in a server set up. Run the OS on the SSD, and set up a raid with the tera-byte drives.

I don't think it's worth getting an SSD yet. I have a 2 year old 40GB Intel and I don't find it useful in my day to day use of my desktop. I can understand using one in a laptop for power consumption when off the grid but that's it IMO. I wasted a good $150 ATT.

Auggie, remember in the 80's how much a mfm drive was. SSD's have to come down in price, before I would consider it. Maybe in four or five, when I am ready to replace this netbook, ssd's will become standard by then.

I don't think it will be long before SSD's are standard in all portable devices, and prices vs volume-increases will cause major price drops.

I remember the MFM's but not the price as I bought one of our company's showroom business class rigs, including a 15"colour CRT and an impact printer for $1200 in '85! :eek :-D My first rig.:)

Anyways bb, unless you're always mobile I wouldn't spend the money yet but it's up to you of course.:)

My opinion is the only way to use SSD in a desktop, is via PCIe.

All the hassle with a slower, 2.5" utilizing the bottleneck SATA is by comparison is not worth the price.

I have a HyperX 120Gb. One thing you need to be aware of is most of the SSD mfgrs using SandForce 2281 controllers (Kingston's HyperX, OCZ's Agility 3, vertex 3, patriot, etc) are experiencing issues with the drives sometimes dropping out (they stop responding, Windows freezes or BSOD's) and you have to power off then power on the computer to get the computer's BIOS then Windows to "see" the drive again. I've had it happen a few times in the 2 months I've had my hyperX and the OCZ & Patriot support forums are full of people having the same issues.

Symptoms can vary between Intel and AMD motherboards, with Intel CPU boards seeming to have more frequent issues. OCZ and Patriot have just released firmware updates(with mixed results). I have been working with Kingston techs and engineers and they are working on a firmware update as well.

Right now the general feeling is if you need/want to buy a SATA III SSD today, a Crucial M4 or an Intel is a good choice.
