thinkpad T21 rom hardware?

ok, this is what I have going on

the rom drive and the floppy drive are removable and can only have one in at a time ,but the dvd rom is not recognized
my question now is

how do I get the dvd rom recognized
I put a disk in and it spinns
but doesnt do anything
add new hardware cannot find it
I cant reinstall it

but i used a boot cd to get the computer going in the first place. .
I am comfused. . . .looking in the device mngr and nothing there either?

 

I did a google and the closest I can see so far is

but i am still lost


when I do a search its default is D:\ with a cd rom icon


I see
"thinkpad Ultrabay 2000 device properties" in the control panel
and the DVD is there
but it does not function

 

I enbled the tray icon for Ultrabay 2000 device
but there is a red "x" over it?
but it is in. . .

 

ok,
with the drive in, ultrabay says I can remove the device safely
so I pull it out,safley
when i put it back in
it checks the status and I get an errror

" Failure ! System has failed to load drivers. Ultrabay 2000 device is not configured. Please remove the Ultrabay 2000 device from the system"
