Thinkpad z61m running hot

My Thinkpad z61m laptop just started running very loud, assuming its a fan control issue but not sure. I appears to be something that has less to do with the operation of the computer but is very annoying like a motor running slow and fast.

 

Clean out all the vents and fans with canned air,run speedfan to check your temps are in spec and visually inspect all your fans are working.

You can turn some fans down in speedfan as a last resort but i wouldn't recommend it just yet as its running fast for a reason.

I ran the program. Im beginning to think its not the fans but the hard drive itself. Not sure what to do about it. Check Bios?

 

Well you could remove the hard drive and turn on the laptop,if its quiet then its the HD,the program I just showed you Speedfan has a tab called SMART,check the smart data it will show you the health and condition of your hard drive.

 

Smart tab i get. Just that when I went to choose which hard drive to check it was only a blue line with no text

 

You may have to enable SMART in bios,that or speedfan/your laptop doesn't support it.

 

The other features seem to be working but the smart one doesnt

 

I'd take the hard drive out then see what your laptop sounds like without it.
