All of a sudden, it seems, when ever I click a link in an e-mail, I get this message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. This is fairly recent. What did I do wrong? How do I correct it? The last time it happened was with a reply from a Major Geek to one of my questions. I couldn't get to his answer by clicking the link. Thanks for any help.

I assume you have a browser set as your default browser .... ?

Go in to your control panel and internet options.

then go in to your programs tab at the top.

at the bottom you should see internet programs with a set programs button click it.

Then you should see set your default programs at the very top click on that.

go to your browser you using and click on that.

then click on set this program as default at the bottom.

that should solve your problem, if not do all the steps again untill you get to the last one.

then click choose defaults for this program and tick all the boxes in there and save.

    Hope this helps

Thank you, sexyandy81. It worked--for Firefox and IE, but not for Opera. But it had been working for Opera before it stopped.

Thank you, FED UP. I'll be darned if I remember how to make Opera my default browser. It is must have been my default because the links were working earlier.

Go to options in your opera browser and you should see check if opera browser is your default browser and check that box.

if you download another browser it will make that as default.

if not follow the steps i put in my previous post as it works with all browsers.

    Hope this helps

I followed your advice step-by-step for both instructions (No.1 and No 2) and neither one worked. I know that Opera is my default browser. I appreciate your attempts. Thank you for trying.

If you haven't found the solution yet, may I ask what operating system you are using ?
If you are using Windows 7 click Start > Control Panel > Default Programs
From there you can set default programs and also set default programs for specific filetypes or protocols.

I haven't found a solution yet, and I'm just working around it--mainly by using Firefox or IE. I'm using Vista. Thanks for the efforts.
