This time I REALLY need help.....

I have my daughter's comp at my home now. It is an HP pavilion with Win 2000 OS. When she boots up it always comes up with a "Log on to Windows". Apparently she forgot her password. I've tried every variation of the things she thought might be her password but to no availl. I've tried going to safe mode but after choosing "safe mode" it asks for the Log On to Windows. What are my options. I do have a small handgun here that I could ventilate it with if necessary. BTW I am not greatly computer literate (surprise!).

one other thing.............I have no relevant CD's or floppy's for this system. Am I SOL?

did you try hitting cancel when that little window pops up? that can get you past it

 

There should be a password jumper plug inside the PC which is used to clear forgotten passwords. Contact HP tech support.

thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll contact HP tomorrow. also on the window asking for logon there is no cancel just ok but will recheck.

A cancel option kinda defeats the purpose of a password, don't ya think?

Huh... I can imagine there being a jumper for clearing the power-on/BIOS password, but not one that would clear the Windows password. Of course I could be mistaken but I'm not sure that this will be a hardware tweak.

Someone suggested bypassing the password with Escape or cancel. This can take you into a default login if it is configured (IIRC it is the default behaviour for Win2K) - other than that I;m not sure what the best approach would be.
