    Dear Folks,

Everytime I run my mouse over an object on my desktop or open program, I get the very annoying pop-up, usually a rectangle, that always seems to get in my way. It often blocks my view of what I am trying to look at.

How do you turn this off?

    Thanks,

    Hudson's Pops

    Try this:

    go to Start/Settings/Folder Options/View/
uncheck "popup information for elements in folders and the desktop"

that might not be the exact wording.

    :) Dear abri,

Yes!! That worked. It stopped the little blankety-blanks!

You are my hero! The world needs more heroes!

    Thanks a million!

Another method is to install TweakUi.
This is a small download and available from the MS website, or from http://www.annoyances.org.

It offers lots of other tweaks, as well as getting rid if those bl**dy balloons.

It is also PART of the 53mbyte download from MG at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=710

    Not for dialup users.:D

What balloon tips does it get rid of? I'm interested in getting rid of the irregular pop-ups that appear for instance, when there's not enough room in my start list for all recently used programs. The little clarifying balloons for when you point at something I find useful.

Also, with this tool you gave the link for, is there an undo for if you change your mind?

abri, check out TweakUi as I posted earlier.
Go to "Taskbar and Start Menu" and check / uncheck "Enable balloon tips" as often as you desire.

I must admit I'm not sure if it also stops "the little clarifying balloons", but it sure stops the others. Bazza

actually, I love the little balloons. I just don't like the irregular great big ones that cover up other stuff. But I will look at the thing you mentioned. It looks like a good tool. :)

    It loads tweakui.exe into C:\windows\system32.
Make a shortcut that points to it, there.

The install tells you it has installed, but NOT WHERE !!!! :p
The big ones are a real PITA.
Lots of other good tweaks that TweakUi does, as well.

Correct, but a quick glance to the "all programs" menu, displays "Power toys for windows xp". ;)

you can right click on the shortcut and click on "find target".
the title bar will display the path.

I didn't notice that when I installed it, more than once, trying to find out where it went. Must have overlooked it. I don't use shortcuts so didn't think to check out my front page. Bazza
