My computer is not recognizing my thumb drive when I put it in the USB port. I have alot of info on it and was hoping that there is a way to retrieve the info from the chip?

    Hi

    Which Windows version you using?

Do you get any error messages when plugging in the USB Drive?

Has this USB pen ever worked in this PC or is this just happened?

If you go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Managment > Disk Management ( with the USB pen plugged in ) is it in the drives listing?

Have you tried the USB pen on another PC? ( [Short term fix ] this would allow retrieval until you cna get your USB ports to recognised the USB Pen )

Unplug all otehr USB devices apart from Keyboard and Mouse and try again, also try different USB ports ( possible that too much power is being drainged from the USB port your using ).

If you go into Device Manager are there any Yellow ! marks with USB as the listed item? if so what one.

I am using Windows 03 and I believe 05. I get no error message and going throught the control panel shows that the thumb drive does not even present. I have tried several different computers and none of them acknowledge the thumb drive. It is not the computer.
    Thanks

    Hi

What type of Thumbdrive is it as in make, as sometimes the makers have recovery tools, but as its not being recognised on multiple PCs it sadly seems as if the drive is corrupted ( easily happens with Fat formatted USB devices as if you pull them out when data is still being transfered, this can cause corruption of the file table ) and only suggestions I have for you now are to try a data recovery application, it "may" allow the device to be recognised and the data to be recovered.

I have had success with this one http://www.majorgeeks.com/ultimate_data_recovery_d5336.html ( but as mentioned as your USB drive is not being found in the drives listing then you maybe out of luck )

or http://www.majorgeeks.com/TestDisk_&_PhotoRec_d5561.html ( The PhotoREC application, while its name is aimed at PhotoRecovery, it does however recover many other file extentions as in .doc .exe .txt etc

after the free applications to recover data, the only option finally is one of the professional data recovery agents, like http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/
