I have WIndows 2000 w SP4 and recently installed Office 2003. After which it messed up the picture viewing.

I uninstalled Spybot because scanning became the first option instead of open.

JPEG files are associated to Infranview, but they are not previewing, and only the icons show in the thumbnails view.

The files do automatically open into Infranview.

    I tried
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;243401

My problem is with the .jpg and .jpeg registry keys, there is already a "OpenWithList" subdirectory with "ois.exe" subdirectory within it. I tried to create the new key ShellEx but get the "Cannot create key: Error writing to registry" dialog box.

the .jpe registry key has both the "OpenWithList" subdirectory with "ois.exe" subdirectory within it and a "ShellEx" with the "{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}" subdirectory and the correct data value.

Just checked in Infranview, I cannot associate JPG/JPEG/JPE file to Infranview while in Infranview, even though JP2, JPC, JPE, JPF, JPM files are associated to Infranview in WIndows Explorer.

I added JPEG to Windows Explorer but it disappeared.

By previewing do you mean in the left pane of Explorer when you highlight a jpg file?

    You could try:
From: http://www.tweakxp.com/article36849.aspx but I'm not entirely sure it works in Win 2000. I don't think it could hurt to try since I think regsvr32 is a valid command in Win 2000.

    Sorry for the late reply.

OIS is the office picture manager.

I am not familiar with Office Picture Manager. Does this work?

Open Picture Manager, Click Tools, click File types, UNcheck JPEG.

    If not.

This might not work for 2000. For that try the next procedure.
Go to one of your pictures. Right click on it and select Properties. Under the General Tab, you will see "opens with" and a change button. Click the change button. Windows Photo Viewer should be on of the options along with Infranview. You can also browse for one of your programs you wish to use.

Click Start, click My Computer, click the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.
In the Registered file types list, click the file type that you want to open with a different program, and then click Change.

You should also be able to browse to a program you wish to open with it.
