I Just downloaded Thunderbird 5.0 and the install went fine and it works. But in the message window, it does not have reply, forward, delete etc. How do I turn that on??????:confused

Have you found reply, forward, delete etc., yet? By "message window", do you mean the preview part of your Thunderbird window, the area where you view the content of a received message, or do you mean a new message window (for an outgoing message)?

I have the portable version of Thunderbird; it may be a bit different from your version but I believe the reply, forward, & delete buttons are basically the same.

No I have no found it yet. When you open a message, there was in the former Thunderbird a series of options on what to do with a message.
Your could reply, forward, there were a couple of other things and delete.

Those options are not there now. This was for incoming mail, not outgoing.

I've been using Windows Live Mail as my primary email client and only have the portable version of Thunderbird. So, again, I'm not sure my version looks like yours. But, the Reply, Forward, Delete, etc. buttons are not located on a top menu bar in Thunderbird, where you find them in many other email clients. With T-bird, the buttons appear in the message pane. See the attached image. Now, do you see the buttons in your T-bird?

Yes, those are the five, but on a PC they are in the message window of incoming mail. Thunderbird 5 does not have them.

Sorry if I'm missing the point but the above sentences are contradictory. Your incoming mail IS IN Thunderbird; therefore, they, i.e. the buttons, are in Thunderbird.

Why would you need the buttons anywhere besides received messages? Reply, Forward, and Delete only apply to received messages; if you're composing a new message, they do not apply.

I just installed T-Bird 5 (over Lanikai 3.1 x64 aka T-Bird beta) and those buttons are there for me in the message window.

The only thing I can find is if you right click in the top of the message window header (where it shows From, Subject, To) near where the buttons would be. You should get a button that says Customize. Click on that and try Restore Default Set and see if that brings them back. If not try re-installing.

Based on what JerryDDD has said so far, I don't believe he's missing any buttons. He has acknowledged that he sees buttons when viewing a received message, which is where they are supposed to be. So, he's not missing any buttons.

His first post said those buttons (Reply, Forward, Archive, Junk, Delete) were not there.

In reply #5, he acknowledged that he sees the buttons when viewing a received message. And, that's where he would need them.

Out of sheer curiosity I just installed TBird 5 in an XP VM. When in Inbox the buttons are there. You don't have to be viewing a message to get them but they are there as well.

OK, perhaps we have some mis-communication here. If you're in the Inbox, then you're looking at a received message, which is really what I was saying. You need not have opened the received message in a separate tab. The image I attached in a previous post was from a message in the Inbox, from a view of the image inside Inbox, not in a separate tab.

I THINK he meant he knew what buttons you were talking about but they aren't there in his t-bird 5. He's not seeing them in the window with the incoming message. (at least that's how I saw his reply:confused) If right clicking and selecting Restore from the Customize menu doesn't bring them back for him he probably should re-install t-bird 5.

You don't see the buttons until you select a message in the Inbox. Buttons like Forward have no meaning until at least one message is selected. He doesn't need to reinstall, just click a message.

Yes, that's what I said back in reply #6.

Umm, why isn't JerryDDD in here participating in this discussion? Not much point in further comments without his participation.

Maybe he's embarrassed at not realising it was so simple.

I have read all the posts. . . . Sorry the five missing items are still gone. I have deleted Thunderbird and reinstalled, still not there. I can delete a message by right clicking, then selecting delete, but there is no way to forward. Of course I could copy, Paste then do it.

Well here is what you should be seeing. First pic is with messages in Inbox but none selected, and has no buttons. Second is same after selecting one of the messages, and has all the buttons.

This is a fresh install of TBIrd 5 in an XP VM.

I'm a web mail user so have no recent experience with Thunderbird; is there a setting under View that could have this effect?

Do you actually any messages in T-bird 5? If so, can you post a screen shot? I and Earthling have posted screen shots which show the buttons. You should see the same buttons.

Also, you should have the Reply, Forward, and Delete commands on the Message menu of the main menu bar. In other words, if you click on Message (on the top menu bar), you should see the Reply, Forward, and Delete commands. Do you have that?

Also, I believe someone mentioned customizing the menu in a previous post. If you right click on the toolbar/menu bar area somewhere, you should see Customize on the right click menu. If you select it, you have the option to customize your menu bar or Mail Toolbar. From that screen, you can drag icons for various buttons onto the menu bar or Mail Toolbar.

  21. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

I'll take a look at that in a while, but the screenshots I posted were the default views immediately after installation and importing an account. The OP should be seeing exactly the same.

Looks like you asked the right question satrow, The default view, which I am using, has the message pane ticked, but if it isn't ticked there are no buttons until the message is opened. What a stupid layout!

    @JerryDDD View > Layout > Message Pane

  23. usafveteran

    usafveteran MajorGeek

Well, maybe it's not a stupid layout. Keep in mind T-bird is a tabbed email client; it opens messages in tabs when the message header is doubled clicked in the Inbox. And, when you go to the tab containing an open message, the various buttons appear there. Most other email clients also allow disabling the preview pane, the equivalent of the T-bird setting in your post.

(For anyone who cannot see the Mail toolbar, click View -> Toolbars and put a tick next to Mail Toolbar.)

In the Mail Toolbar where the 'Get Mail' button is, right click an empty part of the toolbar -> click Customize.
From the pane that opens, left click and drag any icons you want, to the Mail Toolbar.
    Click Done when satisfied.

Thanks Earthling! Now we are getting somewhere. In your "test" there are no buttons. In "Test1" There are. I'm getting in ALL selected messages, NO buttons. No matter what I do, and there does not seem to be a way to turn them on. Are the buttons gone in Thunderbird 5? I may go back if they are.

Sorry Jerry but you are not correctly understanding the significance of the two pics I posted. It has nothing to do with which message is selected, only whether you have the Message Pane selected or not in the View menu.

It's simply View > Layout > Message Pane, and ensure you have clicked on one of the Inbox message headers.

Personally I think it's a ridiculous way of presenting your message options, and your difficulty with it illustrates that.

I've just installed Thunderbird 5.0 (WinXp), and only spotted the message pane buttons when I expanded the window to full-screen. Reduce to a smaller window and the buttons fall off the RHS of the page. Looks like a bug to me - I'm sure the Mozilla folk will fix it soon!

Can we clarify the version # here? Below is an image from my portable version of T-bird, the latest version available, at least from portableapps.com. Notice the "Mozilla/5.0" and also the "Thunderbird/3.1.11". So, is not 3.1.11 the latest version of Thunderbird?

Edit: See http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/3.1.11/releasenotes/. It states version 3.1.11 was released June 28, 2011. So, again, is that not the latest version?

Mine, installed just last week, is the same as Potion's. But is usaf's the portable version?

    • Thunderbird/3.1.11 is your version of Thunderbird.
    • Mozilla/5.0 is agent string that Thunderbird uses when, for example, it connects to a website to collect and display external links in a message.
    • Gecko 20110616 is the HTML/CSS/DOM layout engine.

Yes, I'm using the portable version. And, I just updated it. Now, it's version 5.0. I think what caused some confusion, for me at least, was just some skepticism that I 3.1.11 was not actually the latest version when I had only quite recently obtained it.

But now, I see that Mozilla seems to be slinging new versions of Thunderbird out fast and furious, like they are with Firefox. They're really playing a silly numbers game, apparently for marketing purposes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Mozilla_Thunderbird shows that 3.1.11 was, as plodr reminded me, on June 21, and then version 5.0 was released just one week later. Um, why no version 4? I believe it's because they think higher numbers make people think the product is better compared when compared to competitors.

Now, getting back to the issue of JerryDDD and Potion, I see the reply, forward, archive, junk, and delete buttons in the same place on version 5.0 as they were on 3.1.11. And, I do not need to have Thunderbird maximized to see them. So, I don't know what their problem is.

Thunderbird 5.0 is NOT like the past thunderbird versions. I had to got into the program and tell it what icons I wanted. Reply, forward, Junk and delete. On my thunderbird those Icons are now on top next to Help. Had I not physically found how to do this, I would still not have those icons at all in Thunderbird 5.0. For the basic computer user, NOT a good idea to not have the program install them like it used to.

JerryDDD you seem to be the only one that does not have the icons. I suspect there is something wrong with your install.
Grab a USB stick and test the portable version to be sure you can see the icons.

  38. JerryDDD

    JerryDDD Private E-2

Your right. I seem to be the only one that is having the trouble. However, I now have it under control, and have the icons on the top, next to Help. Thanks, but I'll just leave it. Everything works.;)

Problem with message pane buttons disappearing off the RHS of the screen goes away when I uninstall Lightning (calendar) plugin.
