I installed a new US Robotics router a couple of days ago and everything appears to be ok, except...I can't get thunderbird to send an e-mail!! When I hit the send button, it connects really quick, as it should since I have DSL, but once it connects and then it says that it is sending the mail, and the progress bar just has a slider in it that keeps running forever. Then after about a minute...I get the warning that it didn't work, and to check my server settings.

And as I said before...I can surf the net and recieve e-mails all day long, but just can't send'em!!

I'm in a hurry...off to work, so let me know if I miss something!! BTW I run Win XP SP2

That would make sense, since I am using AVG, but....I have been for awhile, and there was no problem at all when I had the Dlink router, which also had a firewall.

Assuming that is the problem...is there a work around in the configuration of AVG, or the router firewall...and if so...could someone let me know what it is!?!?

Or I'm wondering if I just uninstall and reinstall AVG it will automatically configure correctly to work with my new router!!!???

Sorry Roger I should have posted the whole thread, yes a un-install / re-install of AVG picked up the Original Posters router / email server again fine, dont see why it wouldnt configure and work ok with your router.

Well...I hate to say...It's still the same story!!!!:(

I un-installed AVG and re-installed it...rebooted, and updated, etc., etc., and I'm still having the same problem!!!!

Here is the screen shot of the error message I get when I let it just sit there until it times out....

Ummmmm...wellllllll....it appears as though the sending of e-mails isn't the only problem!! I can't get the pic to upload into photobucket. The progress bar at the bottom of the browser get's about 3/4 to 7/8 over and then just stops and the active/inactive circle up in the upper right hand corner just keeps spinning!!

I guess we are going to have to move onto another idea...or do you think I should just call US Robotics tech help!!??

I have read alittle bit there...but I really think it is the new router...especially since I've recently discovered that I can't seem to upload anything either!!!!

After doing some more reading (still learning about routers!!!!) I found that this particular router has all the ports closed by default. There is a section in the configuration called "Port Triggering". I guess you're supposed to enter a "range" as opposed to just a single port. Could this be what I need to do...and if so, how would I know what range of port numbers to use. As I stated before...it doesn't appear to just be thunderbird trying to send mail, but I apparently can't make uploads (i.e. pictures to photobucket).

    Anymore ideas??

    Thanks ahead of time!!!!

Which model USR router do you have?

Do you also have a software firewall Roger? disable that in case its causing a problem.

Well...that worked...turning off my Sygate firewall did it...I thought I tried that once before and it didn't make any difference...but who knows!!! I've had soooo much crap going through my head lately, there's no telling!!!!

Anyhow...Thunderbird is set to allow in the application list for the sygate firewall, so why is it all the sudden blocking it, when I haven't changed any settings!?!? Guess maybe installing the new router is causing a conflict between the two firewalls now??

It is a US Robotics, MAXg, USR5461, Wireless router.

Ok...I got it!!!! I talked to tech help, and I have to do the port triggering in the hardware firewall in the new router. The thing that confused me though...in the port triggering configuration...you have to enter a range for the different settings, and little did I know that if you want to trigger one port and one port only (ie 25 for thunderbird) you just enter 25 in all the fields....there doesn't necessarilly have to be a "range" so to speak. So to make a long story short...I did 25 for the e-mail, and 443 for uploading to photobucket and to hopefully clear up some of the glitches I've run accross while surfing the web, like sites timing out before they completely load, etc., etc.
