.tiff files problem

I am using a PC running Windows XP. I do a lot of downloading of public domain images, and many are .tiff files. Until recently, I have been able to open these files in Photoshop, with no problem. Now, they open immediately in QuickTime, without offering a choice of applications.

I went to Windows/Tools/Folder Options/File Types, thinking that I could reset the .tiff handling, but both .tif and .tiff files do not appear in the list of file types. Hidden files and Folders are displayed.

I suspect that QuickTime has appropriated these files, and I want them back. QuickTime will not allow these files to be saved or copied, which brings my workflow to a halt.

If anyone can tell me how to solve this, I would be most appreciative.

    Thank you.

Are the files being saved to Hard drive? If so try right-clicking a .tif file and choosing Properties. You should see an option to change the default program which opens them.

Thanks, Sach2. I should have mentioned that most times the .tif download is through a link, not by right clicking on the image itself. Right clicking on the link does not offer properties. .tif images are generally not posted on the web, because the are so large.

I did discover another thing about this. I was working in Chrome, which I have learned to tolerate, because Firefox, which I prefer, is so slow and does not like our relatively slow DSL. Anyway, going back to FF, I can download the .tif through the link, and end up in Photoshop. Could this be a browser problem?

I'm not familiar with Chrome. If in Chrome you open Configuration (click the wrench at the top right) Choose Options then Under the Hood. What does it show under Downloads?

I have just what you've shown in your thumbnail. I do have the box "Ask where to save each file before downloading" ticked. The clear auto_opening settings is grayed out.

Let's wait and see what someone more familiar with Google Chrome has to say. I think it probably is a browser setting.

I just tried downloading a tiff in that browser and it of course downloaded the file to my default download folder. If I right-click the download icon at the bottom of the browser I can choose to open the file or open the folder that contains the file.

Now on the webpage I downloaded the tiff from I can right click the link and choose "Save Link as" and it opens a window where I can choose the folder for the download. (This might be a workaround for you)

I'll look again tomorrow (it is late for me) to see where Google keeps it's list of programs to open a file. You are saying when you click the link it just opens in QuickTime but the actual file doesn't get saved to your download folder?

I think you've solved the problem. I have always saved images by left clicking on the link, or right clicking on the image. When I try following your "save link as" procedure, the file downloads to the folder, and I can work with it from there. Great, great, great!

I really appreciate all your time on this - you're right it's late.

    Thanks so much.
