    Hello everyone,

I have a mistery; to me; in my system. Four days ago I installed tightvnc 2.0.4,
and I have not been succesful in connecting. :( Well, have not been able to go
pass the test available at gotomyvnc website. I get the error message
that public IP "is not responding on Display" X.

I have even tried the test with the computer connected directly to the DSL modem
with the firewall disabled. :confused The message keeps coming up as if the server is
not running at all, and yet the server appears on the windows task manager. I am
    very confused at the moment.

I am running tightvnc 2.0.4 on OEM Windows XP Home SP3.

    HELLLP!
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Did you static your internal IP? If you leave the router in place (I'm guessing since you said you tried to connect directly, you must of had a router in there)
Static your local IP (usually a 192.168.1.x) address. Use a number that is not in your dhcp scope or "list of usable addresses". Then in your router go to port forwarding and set ports 5900 & 5901(check your VNC setup) to forward those ports to your local IP that you static'd earlier.

So when the request comes in port 5900 the router will pass it along to the IP of the VNC your running and that is it.

Hello, and thank you for your response.

Yes, the pc has a stactic ip address. Port 5900 is forwarded to that static ip which is 192.168.1.31...

Here is some information in picture form that may help a bit; provided it can be seen and made sense of; rolleyes

Here is an update on the progress for the search of a solution...

Thanks foogoo for the pointers, those helped me refocus and for whatever reason, decided to start fresh. So, had the DSL modem
reset to default settings, then changed the internal IP, and modified the default port forwarding profile instead of creating a new
    profile as I did before.

The gotomyvnc test went through, and then connected to the system without problems. Then use RevoUninstaller and remove the firewall,
then downloaded and installed the most recent version of Comodo firewall. Opened the ports on the firewall, reconnected without a problem.
    So far, so good.

Next up, is to add the router back into my network topology... Will I have to reset it as well?

Did you test to remote from the outside (other location)?

Some Routers will not allow In-Out-In on the same connection. I.e. testing the remote over the Internet from withinn the same network.

Hello cat5e... I was able to connect to the system using my android phone. Just in case, made sure the wi-fi was off. For about couple of hours, I was disconnecting and connecting succesfully. Shut down the system a couple of times, and had no problems reconnecting and disconnecting.

Now that the linksys router is in the mix, I am back to square one...

    :cry ...back to square one...

Checking you out at IP address "the.pub.lic.ip"...

    Scan of "the.pub.lic.ip" is complete.

Hit 'reload' or 'refresh' in your browser to scan again.

Since the pc is no longer attached to the DSL modem, I have removed the forwarding service previously set. On the basis that it may interfere with the linksys router DHCP server.

So, what do I do now? :confused
    Where to look?

Here is how my LAN is setup: pc with static ip 192.168.3.115 is connected to the Linksys router WRT54G with default gateway at 192.168.3.1 the first ip is 192.168.3.100 last is 192.168.3.09 Only 10 IPs available. Have only 5 devices.

The DSL modem is using ip 192.168.1.1 and there is something about ip 192.168.2.1

    What is your net mask?
Looks like your running several networks there.
Can you set the dsl modem for pass through? That would prevent the double batting I think is happening.

    SUCCESS!!! SWEET SUCCESS!!!
Thanks foogoo for sharing your genius!!! :major
Yep! It was a double whammy...

In order to accomplish your suggestion for setting the DSL modem for pass through or bridge mode, I went looking for how to accomplish just that. Found instructions for an older (compare to my current) firmware version on my modem at this address http://onlinehelp.verizon.net/consumer/bin/pdf/NetworkSteps/Case21508WiredLinksys6100.pdf and manage to set the DSL modem into BRIDGE mode. Once that was changed, the previously configured pieces fell in place.

Thank you very much. I now possess some networking skills to brag about... :cool Can I say advance computer networking skills? :-D

Next up... change from tightvnc to ultravnc for security sake or is there a more secure version of the VNC family? And then add my Linux-Ubuntu running laptop.

    Thank you - thank you

Great, I was using my ipad to last night and it changed natting to batting, but you got it.

Hey, foogoo, if you don't mind explaining how you changed the natting to batting, please do, I am curious about that, and it may be a second solution, would it?

BTW, I have no clue about what batting is (except of course in baseball). Natting, maybe, if it is NAT or network address translation.

:) About VNC not being secure - well have found out that the whole VNC family is not secure with the exception of the enterprise version. Nevertheless, I am reading about OpenSSH, and how to connect VNC through it. So, I will be looking into how that work on Android, Ubuntu, and XP. I will certainly have fun this week... :(

    And hey, thanks again... :cool
