Right been left some money from a relative and only want to spend about £250 of it on a new guitar! (thats about $450 to you US folks!)
I want to get a Gibson, looking in the epiphone range - what would you guys and gals recommend????

open to all suggestions of course!

I have an Epiphone 12 string acoustic that I love. Sound andaction are awesome --- Haven't played an electric by them though.

Epiphone electrics aren't all that great. I wouldn't get one just to have a Gibson. I would either try and squeeze out a couple hundred more and go with a real Les Paul (in US, certain Les Pauls can be had for less than a grand), or go with something different altogether.

I always wanted an SG, like Tony Iommi. I've always played an Ibanez. They're great for Death Metal; thin neck, low action.

    Good luck, whatever you decide.

Epiphone makes a pretty good guitar but you have to really watch for them. Make sure you play before you buy, do not order one blind. Most of what I have seen are neck pockets that are to big and/or shimmed, slightly twisted necks, and cheapo electronics. Have had a few buddies find some nice ones but it tookthem a while to do so. Once they found one, we replaced all the pots, set the action and intonation, and on a rare occasion replaced the plastic nut with a bone one.

Good luck with your search and let us know how it goes.

ok looked at some epiphones and to be honest, they're not the greatest looking things on earth. i think i might splash out a bit more and go for a les paul of sg, what you think?

You want my honest recommendation? Go to a few stores and play everything you can get your hands on. When you find the right guitar, you'll know it. I wouldn't focus to much on looks or one particular style of guitar. Buy something that fits your hands and makes your ears happy.

    Ditto on Bluesman's comment.

I like Ibenez. Suits my style of play and very comfortable in my hands. I use .007's when I can find them, and yes I use .46mm pick. Anything else breaks the strings :( .
