I'm replacing my old computer (power supply exploded, don't ask, it was traumatic.) I have great backups, everything I need, but...

My old AV had a month left on the subscription and, well, I am NOT that happy with it. So I'm in the market for a good anti-virus solution.

What I need: Good security, first and foremost.
It MUST play well with my MMORPGS.
And finally: Cheap is good, but free is better.

The OS will be windows 7 pro 64 bit.

    Have a read here:

A year old, but still solid advice and some good links...

and here for a bit of firewall/security comparisons. be sure to read about what they are testing and how they score:

I think you'll find that two or three products seem to be represented in most geek opinions on this subject, and it will come down to what you like best, what works for you...

Thanks for taking the time to post, Cipher.

The links were helpful. I'll probably go with Kaspersky; once I have it configured to play well with my games AND to update at a regular time so it doesn't bog me down unexpectedly it should work well. While it's more expensive than I wish I'd sooner be safe than sorry. (I've had one infection on a computer in my life. I remember it well. Never again.)

I hadn't mentioned a firewall in my original post because I have a strong preference for Comodo. I've just had good luck with it. In addition, my router claims to include one. (I can't be sure that the claim Linksys makes is justified, which is why I have Comodo.)

    Most routers have SPI firewalls.

For the most part, it is only useful for incoming connections. Therefore, if you don't trust what is transmitting data on your machine, then a software firewall is useful.
