TLG File Causing Slowdown?

Sometimes at startup my unit will slog along much slower then usual. For several months I simply decided it was having another Monday and put up with it. Lately when I run CCleaner Registry cleaner, it will find one "Unused File Extension .TLH - .tlgFile HKCR\.TLG" or instead "Unused File Extension .tlgFile - QuickBooks Transaction Log File HKCR\.TLG". Before starting this post I ran CCleaner Registry cleaner and it found nothing. A moment ago I opened QuickBooks Pro 2006 then closed it without going beyond the opening screen, ran CCleaner Registry cleaner and it found an unused TLG file. Apparently the unused TLG File is conflicting with something in my system to cause the slowdown. Any guesses what that may be? All ideas, suggestions, and comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, K.

Finding unused file extensions running CCleaner is not unusual. If you had opened several programs, CCleaner may have found more. I don't think that is the cause of your system slowdown.
What are you running at startup? Perhaps one of your protection programs is scheduled to run a scan when the computer starts up. (Someone elsewhere mentioned that AVG was trying to update, even though it wasn't originally set up that way. Apparently one of the rent updates changed the setting from manual update to automatic). It might be worth looking through all the protection programs to see when they update and when they scan.

Thanks plodr, appreciate the advice. Hadn't thought about that - my unit being sluggish simply because the startup takes a bit. Good idea, Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. (Now, info I should have put in first post, sorry) Sometimes the unit has been on long enough to be way past the startup sequence, but it still runs sluggish. A scan by CCleaner Registry will turn up a .tlg file. Once that is cleaned, the unit runs fine. Unless I've unstalled a program or something else substantial like that CCleaner Registry usually finds nothing and the unit runs fine. The only thing I've discovered that I can depend upon leaving something behind is by closing QuickBooks. If a QuickBooks TLG file is left uncleaned, it takes QuickBooks at least twice as long to open. The only way I know to see what's in startup is Start - Run - msconfig - startup. Right now I have 17 items in startup. In that list there are only 2 items I recognize. In the past I've tried unchecking an item to see what effect it produced. Apparently I didn't know what I was doing because when it seemed to have no effect I looked at startup again and the item I had unchecked was checked again. And the System Tray - that thingy that shows up in the lower right hand corner when I click the arrow - is a complete mystery to me. For instance, a QuickTime icon shows up in the System Tray but there is nothing in Start - Run - msconfig - startup that I recognize as QuickTime. It's really no big deal. If my unit seems sluggish, I simply run CCleaner Registry, clean the left over TLG File and everything is OK again. The process is little annoying but it works. Again Thanks plodr, appreciate your help. Oh, and by the way, great choice of cookies! K.

Open CCleaner, click on Tools and then Startup. Do you see anything in there that you'd prefer not to startup?
Don't remove it through CCleaner because it will be gone for good.
I prefer two programs Startup Monitor and Startup Control Panel.
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

The first one will popup anytime anything wants to run at startup and ask if you want to allow it.
The second puts an icon in your control panel that you click on and from there can selectively uncheck things you do not want to run at startup. If you chnage your mind, you can go back and put a check at the item.

As far as cookies...this gal needs her daily dose of chocolate! :D
