I have a Dell Latitude D610 with XP that died on me the other day. It overheats and shuts down (I have replaced the cooling fan once but I think it is beyond my repair abilities now). If I buy another D610 can I put my harddrive in it and use all the software or is there parts of the software resident in the motherboard memory?

To my subject line, the other option is to buy a new machine but I think at this point all I can get is Vista which I don't want and I'm not really into buying a machine and reloading the operating system immediatelly. 2 more questions regarding Windows 7 is the "word on the street" that it will actually work and 2. will a new operating system require me to go out and repurchase all my software. e.g. Bird watching software (like bird encyclopedias etc).

    Thanks for any input

    Hi

1st question, yes dont see why not, so long as the system specs are the same as Dell as prone to changing some of the hardware in there machines at times.

2nd as for Windows 7 then Yes I would hold fire as its only 7 weeks till Windows 7 is officially launched, although many makers such as Dell with their current sold Vista based PCs offering an upgrade to Windows 7, but personally I would hold out till Windows 7 is a default install on the PCs.

Vista works fine, I had no issues with it from launch in 2006 till a few months back, until I installed Windows 7 final version (I have MSDN account so get new Windows versions before public launch)

As for your software no if you have the CD/DVD/Setup files and the licence keys they use and they are Windows 7 or Vista compatible then you should be fine.
