    Hi all.
I am using Advanced System Care.
It tells me there are several driver updates available, graphics, sound, etc.
Do I trust this util and install them?
    Cheers

I haven't read any bad reviews on this program. However there are some pieces of hardware I don't mess with, one is my sound card the other is my graphics. I'm from the old school on these items and my opinion only if it aint broke don't fix it. Your sound and graphics card shouldn't need an update unless you upgrade the card or there was some kind of defect the manufacture forgot to tell you about and they are rolling out new drivers for it. I would locate the manufacture of the sound and graphic card go to their web site and read the reason for the driver update before I made the update.
Again, this is just my opinion good luck to you,
Hang on for a few and someone else may come through with a mode definitive answer

    Hi

I definatly agree with buggabear on this issue, and while driver applications can alert you to an update, they are NOT always accurate as they generally list unified drivers from the main manufacturer of the device, over the likes of DELL, HP etc who may for many of their PCs have specific drivers as they tend to customise them, be it a Realtek, Intel etc made hardware device... so not always unified drivers will work correctly, so always worth getting any drivers direct from maker of hardware.

As mentioned if not broken DONT fix.

What is your PC? a laptop or desktop and who made it was it OEM like DELL, HP, Sony etc or a custom build and if so then what is motherboard make and version, as well as GFX card? if custom and not a laptop then gfx drivers are worth updating with makers as in ATI or Nvidia with latest, if Laptop then only get from laptop maker the drivers.

    Cheers both.
I built it myself a few years ago.
I agree with the if it aint broke mantra.
Thats one of the problems, I get a BSOD sometimes, loud growl in the headphones just before it.
I also sometimes have a Xear 3D icon in my task bar and sometimes I dont which makes me think that there is a problem with the onboard sound.
Then again the error codes are usually different which points more towards bad RAM so I don't know.
Since running System Care Pro I haven't had a BSOD but you know what these things are like!!
I shall hang fire, if I get another BSOD I will reseat my RAM, if I get another then I shall try the sound card driver only.
    Unless you know different??

    Hi

If you get a BSOD then please post the code and message as this may link to the issue.

    Hi Halo
Heres one that I have had twice.
It starts with a message about DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000166, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804E5433) is the error code.
I have had this one ***STOP: 0x000000D1(0x80FFFFFF,0x0000001c,0x00000000,0x80FFFFFF)
    And others.
I've checked out microsoft knowledge but the advice is very general.

How about including an Everest report so we know what kind of hardware we're working with?

    Hi dlb.
Well, I was going to say 'I have put my specs in a earlier post, see below'.
After looking at this report I see it is a tad more detailed. :)

Your chipset drivers should be installed first. The latest release from nVidia was back in 2004:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_5.10.html
Your motherboard manufacturer's web site has one from 2005:
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=K7NF2-RAID&s=&T=D&ID=3
Once the chipset drivers are installed, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the current sound drivers after downloading a 'replacement' driver from your motherboard manufacturer's web site:
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=K7NF2-RAID&s=&T=D&ID=9
Your sound chip maker (CMedia) does not have the 9739a chipset drivers at their web site, which I find a bit odd. You can also download the CMI9739a driver from this alternative site:
    http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/CMedia/CMedia-Sound-Card-9739A-512-WHQL.shtml
So, after you download the sound driver, you'll uninstall the current driver and restart the PC. Then install the sound driver you just downloaded. Good luck! And keep us posted as to how it goes!

    Thanks for that dlb.
Bit of confusion on my part :-o. You give me 4 links.
You say there is a chipset driver from nvidea and one from asus.
I take it i pick ONE? and uninstall my current drivers before installing the new ones?
Same with the sound driver, one or the other?
    Cheers.

P.s. I'm going to download the drivers and hang fire for a week, as you say if it aint broke..... and since I ran System Care Pro I haven't had a BSOD but it could be a coincidence as this happened before.

:-o I didn't mean to confuse you.... I provided 2 links for the chipset; one from the chipset maker (NVidia) and one from the motherboard maker (ASRock). The ASRock one is newer and recommended, but I provided the NVidia link in case the ASRock driver doesn't help or as an alternative just to see what happens. I tried to do the same for the sound chip; one driver from the motherboard maker, and a 2nd one from a 3rd party site since the sound chip maker (CMedia) did not have a compatible driver posted on their downloads page. So.... yes, in each case, choose only one driver.
    :-D
