So I just bought some new parts and a few of my friends old parts and am having trouble deciding whether I should upgrade the CPU I got already. I would like my computer to be decent for the next few years and am on a really tight budget. Here is what I have so far.

    Used
    DFI Lan Party NF4 SLI-DR (60)
    Athlon 64 3700 (30)
    4x512MB OCZ Platinum DDR400 (120)
    EVGA 7800GTX KO edition (100)

    New
    Aerocool Masstige
    Hiper Type R 580w PSU
    Samsung 320GB SATA 3.0 16MB cache

And I already had my tied and true TDK 4x DVD+/-RW and Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platinum from 2002.

My question is, would this cpu be a good one to hold me down a couple of years, or should I risk it and go ahead with an X2 4200. I would kinda rather stick with what I have, but if the consensus is that it's absolutely completely worth the 90 bucks or so for the cpu and new hsf then I'll do it. Thanks for the input. btw my uses are in this order- Music, gaming, browsing, Office. Everything else is significantly less important.

Trust me it's worth the $90. It'll help you squeeze a little more time out of your pc.

I wouldn't upgrade more than that though cause your specs look good.

Thanks for the info guys. So heres what I've decided to do.
My friend has agreed to go ahead and sell me a second 7800GTX for 100 bucks. I believe my PSU can't handle that alone, so next month sometime I'm going to buy a Thermaltake Auxillary PSU just for the vid cards. I now plan on just waiting until Oct./Nov. and getting a retail AMD Opteron 180 for about 150-170 bucks. Leaving my final system for the next three years {Fingers crossed} at this

    Aerocool Masstige Case
Hiper Type-R 580w Main System PSU
    Thermaltake 275w Video Card PSU
    DFI Lan Party NF4-SliDR Expert
    AMD Opteron 180
    2GB (4x512) OCZ Platinum DDR400
    2x EVGA 7800GTX KO Edition
    Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
    Samsung Spinpoint 320GB SATA 3.0 w/16MB
    TDK 4x DVD+/-RW

And my grand total cost for this system is $835.
Does this sound good, and also reasonably priced? Thanks again for the input.

that should do ya for a while :) after using dual core (intel side though) I wouldn't go back to single core :p I multi task too much for that. The specs look solid and the price isnt too bad. Nice shiny new install of windows and you'll be cooking. Those video cards love dual cores to run on too. my specs
    intel pentium d 930 @3.0 (q6600 quad being ordered friday :) )
    gigabyte 965 ds3 rev 1.3 (1333 fsb)
    4x1 gig ddr2 667
    evga 7950 gtko 512
160,250,500 gig sataII 16m cache hdds
    antec trio 650 power supply
    sata dvd r/rw
