i was diggin' around on the discs i made b4 i changed my hd out and i copied the driver file.on my hp 6736 there is integrated (crystal audio, now cirrus logic) sound on the mobo. when i changed to xp i lost the crystal audio driver. its not listed as a sound driver when i look for it in device manager. anyway the file i found is crystal ac 9x wdm driver( cwawdm.sys). can i try to put it in with the others and see if my audio fixes? or better, how do install it as a driver? i've just been draggin' and droppin' so far to move files but don't i have to install the driver? i'm not sure i know how that's done. oh, the driver is from ME(YUCK!). God, now i'm gonna need a new soundcard...

o.k . i got the dl you suggested. i also found a zip file at cirrus logic that is a win2000 generic for crystal chip 4299. how do i install the dl and which should i use?the one from hp is a .exe and the one from cirrus is a zip file. do i have to remove the current driver?

Use the one from hp, go to start, control panel, sounds and audio , hardware, double click audio device, driver, uninstall. install new one and restart. Double click the exe it will run. ed

tunered- i did exactly what you said and nothing. when i clicked the hp dl it is a zip file. it opened, made a folder for win 2k drivers and that was the end of it. if i look in sound and audio it doesn't list the driver. it still shows the old driver Intel 82891AA AC97 Audio Controller. what happened? please let me know something. i miss my music!

If you go thru the steps that i said when you get to driver does it say, crystal fusion, driver microsoft 5.1.2535.0? This driver is provided in xp. Maybe your reader is crazy, does it read other things right? Using windows Media player or what? ed

now i'm doublin' up.the dl should be for cs4299 which is what it says i have at hp support for my mobo. also ran aida32 and it says the same cs4299. ithink i may be at a dead end but i am seeing different links to files in the links you gave me. might be easier to just slam a card in it.....

Possibly the problem is in your player, or cdrom. Im not convinced that it is driver problem.

my cd rom sounds muddled too. ithas been fine until now. pc sounds are ok, so i'm surfing for cards.i'll see if i can update but it's on my music d/l media player too. all three players at once?

updated windows media to 10. no difference in sound. mainly vocals are weak, and tom petty sounds a bit wobbly.

try one more thing before going crazy, right click my computer, properties, hardware, device manager, double click the drive that you are using, properties, uncheck enable digital cd audio. ed

hey back again tonite. i was not given a choice to disable the digital cd audio in after double clicking the crystal WDM audio codec. now, last nite i found this list of drivers that are supposed to be included in windows xp. the crystal wdm audio codec is listed as one. is this list accurate? if so , i guess i have the same codecs installed twice. it's not listed but i guess they are all bundled together maybe in audio codecs in device manager. i did disable the crystal codec which killed all sound then re-enabled it. i got the same garbled sound. i don't know. now, my wife is pissed cause the wordpad files she saved b4 the hd change will not open in xp. that ought to be fun tracking down.

XP should support your sound, thats why im not convinced that the driver is the problem, have you installed anything after the fact when the sound was all right?. ed

sound was never good the first time i tried to use it to listen to music it sucked. the system sounds are ok. also never had trouble in ME.

If the system sounds are ok, that leads me toward the cdrom that you are using, or the media player you are using. ed

i did update media player to 10. if it was hardware or cd rom why doesn't it matter which one i play? it sounds the same in shareaza media player, windows media player.i am going to dl real player and see if it sounds bad too.......just dl'd real player. it screws up too. this really isn't getting better is it?

also when i went to xp i installed the xp driver from an hp disk for my hp cd writer 16 series. other than that i can't think of anything i've done to this install of xp. i could understand a bad music d/l but not a factory made cd playing bad. this cd rom has never given me trouble. i was planning on upgrading the sound card anyway but not this soo. and also if its not the sound card, then buying a better one might not even solve the problem. do alot of folks have problems with sound after installing xp?

Well, sometimes. Most of the time if they have a aftermarket mother board they have a driver cd that came with it, since yours is a hp, and if you used a disc that maybe was for a dell, thats where the problems begin. Since your not very far along, why dont you burn them drivers you downloaded to disc and reinstall xp. ed

hey guy- i did use a disc for a dell. how did u know? not quite sure i under stand what u are telling me i should do? could u be more specific? if i understand u correctly, i have installed the dell drivers, not hp?

    tunered MajorGeek

You need to get a retail version of xp, using a dell disc is like trying to put a chevy motor in a ford and thinking everything will hook up, wont happen. If you go buy the retail ver. you might need some drivers still, but they can be had at hp. ed

there's gotta be a better solution than that. i paid good money for a genuine full install xp cd. i was never told it would only work in a dell. now i've got to make this one work. my wife will not let me buy another copy of XP. The description on the site says" this is the Dell branded OEM software which will work on all computers. OEM comes in both branded and non branded(DSP)." I expected since it was a clean install on a brand new hd this would be sufficient. now you're saying it's not. either there's another way or they are lying on their site and should be reported. i am going to dig around and see if i can get some other ideas.

hey i was wondering if updating the BIOS and chipset drivers would help me to solve this problem with the sound. i tried a system restore to get the old driver back but it didn't work. i guess i have to find where the controller is and go back to admin mode.....what is config.msi?

  26. tunered

    tunered MajorGeek

First thing dell does not sell windows, they provide a back up copy when you buy thier machine. Most restore disks are for a particular series of pc;s. Im not saying that you wont get it to work, but had it been the right one, you wouldnt be here. I have tried every step without having it in front of me to work on, hopefully somebody can figure this one out. good luck. ed

UPDATE- i went to hp support and did a chat session with a tech. he said my xp was o.k. for my machine then gave me a link to dl the audio codec for my pc. i did and it was different from the two other dl's i had gotten before. i installed the code, stuck my headphones in and it works great. clear as a bell. I am so happy! it pays to not give up. i guess that shows that u have to be careful what u dl.
