Linux still takes a back seat to Lucy pulling the football away from Peanuts. :)

Linux scares the daylights out of me. I'm just not that good.

Must scare everyone else too. Seems the mention of linux and the thread dies.

Nahhh once you understand the file system and figure out a few commands you'll be terrified.:) :) :)

I am guessing most of you hit that point.

Well, not terrified, just not interested in micromanaging an operating system. I got my fill of that back in the old DOS days. Windows may not be perfect, but it's a lot easier.

Windows sucks, but it's all I understand. ;)
I still have a commod. 64 and it looks quite pretty packed in that box.

I have Red Hat Enterprise and it does pretty well. Not so much upkeep anymore, it even handles most of the dependant files when you update. Really powerful!
It has built in compilers, ssh, a browser, wordprocessing software not bad...

  16. micr0dv8

    micr0dv8 Private First Class

Are you selling it? I have a trash 80 somewhere still in the box....

  17. Shiver Me Timbers

    Shiver Me Timbers MajorGeek

Is it compatible with most programs and sites? How is it for viruses? Hackers?

  18. Shiver Me Timbers

    Shiver Me Timbers MajorGeek

I'm not selling mine, but you can get them for $5-$15 around here in yardsales. You want me to look around for one for ya?

For windows programs you would need an emulator but it is pretty secure. Not many viruses written for it. Not near as many as windows. You have the power to turn off just about everything you want. It can be hacked but it is much harder to do unless it hasn't been patched of course.

I didn't connect to the internet until I figured out some things. The best way to try it is to download knoppix. It fits on a cd and runs off the cd. To use it just boot from the cd. When you are done shutdown and take out the cd... Gets you used to the linux environment.... a little anyway.

Patches? Extra cost for them? What about firewalls, they compatible?

Oh my gosh! I've been "called out". I am so grateful to know that you have been thinking of me.... I'm touched! Hello shiver me timbers, and others! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Now, firewalls are built into the kernel. They are called iptables, and you can lock stuff down tight. There is even a GUI interface to make it easier. Me, of course, I like to use the Command Line like a real man.... If Drill Instructor Ramey was tweaking with the Linux, he would not use the GUI front ends. No. He would use the xterminal, or, get real hard core and use the console. Believe me on this one. I know....

Not ready for prime time???? Half the "Net" is run on Unix/Linux, x-flat... :)

I'm not going to even think about giving up my quest.
If the Lord wills, it is my destiny...
    to reach "The Linux Enlightenment"
I'm stubborn enough to hunker down and drive on and stand fast and fight my way through this too!!!

    HOOOYAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Ich bin TALIBONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    HOOOOOOYAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now shiver me timbers, everyone should have the knoppix to play around with.
Like our RedHat friend micr0dv8 posted, It is safe and cool and fun, you don't gotta mess with your hard drive....

    Here is the link:

    knoppix

I know this is a Windows site, and you all are so kind to let me go on and on about this on occasion......

Say anything, but its a hard core, flexible, fast, fun, secure, multitasking, multiuser, cool
    outasight, highly configureable,
    Elite Computering Environment!

I HOPE that I have made myself entirely clear!!!

    :D :D :D

And Greetings to you again, shiver me timbers!!!

    Robert

You go for it Robster. I will cheer you on. One day if I get some guts, I might even try it myself. In the meantime....I'll stand on the side lines and commend you for your bravery.

  24. Robster12

    Robster12 The Horse Whisperer

    Hahahaha!
Its all just cryptic commands and stuff
    Haha!
You know, the developers who have over the years, didn't purposefully make this stuff "hard". They made it configurable.

So, as soon as one becomes aquainted with "The Ways", then,
    off you go.....

    ........
shiver me timbers, the late night geeker....

You guys must have been up late... I had to sleep... you must have a second shift job or something...

  25. Shiver Me Timbers

    Shiver Me Timbers MajorGeek

Well, yes I am a late keeper. I kind of like that "late night geeker", title. Robster, your a genius. Maybe you should be the one to assign titles. You have the creativity for it.
