Tons of bookmarks in Firefox -- laggy -- suggestions?

Before I start, I'll say that it's not much of a help to suggest that I either change browsers or delete some bookmarks. Got it? Good.

I've got a couple thousand bookmarks in Firefox. I like to keep them good organized, no more than a hundred or so per folder. Sometimes when I have tons of bookmarks, I split them into two folders, e.g. Downloads1, Downloads2.

I've noticed Firefox is pretty laggy sometimes. It's especially laggy in the bookmarks manager, which I suppose comes down to my huge amount.

I have version 3.5.3, which I believe is the latest. I've also got a few addons, main bookmarks one is Xmarks to sync it. (I know it's not the syncing causing problems, as I've taken to syncing right after any changes in the bookmarks, it takes up a bit of CPU.)

Any other suggestions? Is there something I did wrong?

I believe history is more likely to slow down FF. Do you delete your History fairly often or have it set to something like 20 days for auto-delete? I know I like to keep my history of visited sites, but found that setting it for 6mos. before deletion was just too much and caused slow downs if I ever tried to browse it. So I went back to 30 days.

I have thousands of bookmarks and don't notice any slowdowns there. I think since FF 3.5, history and bookmarks management are more integrated than before. At least from the GUI stand point.
