Too many internet windows

My PC runs fine until I log in on the internet. Once the internet connects lots of internet windows are opened. I have run AVG and have cleared out a couple of viruses but am assuming that there is a line in some command file that keeps directing the PC to connect to this specific site which in turn is putting the same virus back on the PC. Is this what is known as a hijack?

The problem I have got is that once on the net I am unable to download anything because windows open fater than I can close them and eventually the PC crashes.
