Too Many Popups

Hi. I have a new Compaq laptop (2 months old) running Windows XP and IE 6.0. I've been having a few problems with it. The Wet_Me spyware got installed but I removed it with the help of HijackThis. I also got the Download.Trojan virus but Norton Antivirus deleted that for me (I found an extra copy in My Pictures so I deleted that too).

I'm having a lot of trouble with popups. I have installed the Google Toolbar but it only blocks about half the popups I get, but the most annoying thing is when I go to a web page (it can be any web page) and up to 36 blank IE windows open. This completely locks up IE (but not my computer).

    1. Is this anything to do with the virus? Are there any places it hides on your computer? I wasn't expecting it in My Pictures, so heaven knows where else it may be hiding.

    2. Is there any popup-blocking software I can download that'll completely stop the 36 blank windows?

    3. This is a minor problem, but certain words ('travel', 'porn', 'job' etc.) get highlighted with a thick green line under them in my browser. What can I do about this?

    4. Should I wipe my hard disk - saving all the files I created - and restore using the installation disks I got with my new computer? I have to take this computer to university; I don't want it bogged down in viruses.

    Thank you in advance.

Cecilia, first a question did you run the items Alan mentioned in his post. There is nothing wrong with submitting a Hijaak This log but you need to do other things first and you need to tell us that you have done them. Otherwise we will just ask again. Have you run both Ad-aware and SpyBot S&D? If not, you need to do that. Links to those programs are in Alan's message. Alan also asked you if your virus definitions are up to date. Are they? Did you run the two online scanners given to you in Alan's message? Do you see what's going on here....you must follow directions and give us information to let us know what you have done. It's tuff doing this remotely so you have to help us help you. I see quite a few items in your log that will require fixing but before we do that, you have to do the stuff given above and in Alan's message.

I ran both Spybot and Adaware (and removed everything they came up with), but when I tried to run the online virus scanners the internet windows they ran in stopped responding. My virus definitions are updated for Norton Antivirus, which I've also run again.

Okay Cecilia, shut down all applications especially Internet Explore and Windows Explorer sessions (and any other browsers) and run Hijaak This again and post a new log. Let's see what is left.
