Hello all, Just a couple of quick questions .I suddenly have no sound when i play a CD or DVD .When i go into the Control panel and click on sounds and audio devices is says " no audio Device and all the options are greyed out . I have tried to reinstall the driver but it still says " no audio devices. When i look in "Device Manager "it is blank then i got an error about an MMC snap-in .
I have tried to use System restore but now that doesn't work telling me that "System Restore is not able to protect your computer it has been turned off. Please restart your computer and run System restore again " but i still get the same message when i retry it .Any help would be appreciated.
I run Windows Pro with SP3
Thanks in advance , Dave C

HI! If the PC is telling you that System Restore has been turned off, then there are no restore points. So even if you turned System Restore on, it wouldn't be able to restore to a previous date because when System Restore is turned off, it erases all previously saved restore points, and doesn't create any more until it's turned back on. So.... go to Add/Remove Programs and see if your sound driver is listed. If so, uninstall it and reboot the PC. When it begins to restart, enter the BIOS, go to Integrated Peripherals (it may be different on your PC but should be similar), and locate the Audio settings and make sure the on-board audio is enabled. If you use an 'add-on' sound card (like a Creative SoundBlaster in a PCI slot, for example) then you'd want the on-board audio set to 'Disabled'. Save the changes you've made (if you make any changes) and exit the BIOS and let the PC boot up as usual. If the Hardware Wizard opens when your desktop loads, try to install the audio driver automatically. It probably won't install, but it can't hurt to try. Then try to install your sound driver again. If it doesn't go, please post the make and model of your PC and/or motherboard, and we'll go from there.

Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl and press Enter; click the 'System Restore' tab and uncheck the little box; click 'OK'.

I just tried that but there is no System Restore tab. It came up with System Properties with a choice of "General , Computer name ,Hardware,Advanced Automatic Updates and Remote"

You may want to run some malware scans as they are good cause for the System Restore tab missing; it's not normal for the tab to be missing. Check out the info in this link and you should get things sorted out. If that info doesn't help, take a look at this link. Some malware can turn off System Restore which can cause the tab to not be displayed. If the info in those links doesn't work (read carefully and follow any steps carefully), let us know and we'll go from there.

OK , i had a bit of a fiddle and kept getting "error 2 system cannot find files"
I scanned my puter with Malware Bytes-anti-malware and Spybot and tried again to no avail. I am running Norton 360 Premier Edition and Registary Mechanic if that is of any help .
    Thanks Dave C
