I was searching the web and looking at forums and articles about having too much ram and it looked as if anything over 2 gigs would slow your system down. However the problem i'm having is that all these sites had posts and such that were over a year old or more. I was wondering if with windows xp 64 you can still have too much ram. I currently have 2 gigs and was thinking if I would slow down with 4 with this OS. I know that my system probably wouldn't run much faster with 4 gigs at the moment but I was wondering. I appreciate any help offered.

4gb RAM?? wow, maybe with vista but I see no advantage to it under XP, It could slow your system down depending on the speed of the ram and the bus speed. You didn't say how much your video ram was or if this 2gb is shared RAM, but 2gb should get you through any game/OS changes foe a long while. I wonder running 2gb RAM and suppose an aftermarket video card with RAM. what do you set your Virtual memory to? I could see a major slow down there!!

OK I just checked this out at http://www.edgetechcorp.com/memory/upgrade.asp?cid=21867 and here's the scoop, 1 ghz of RAM for a Dell 8200 is $893.45 so multiply that out by 128 and that's $114361.60 for RAM now I think my machine is good, and if I was to make it a dedicated server, or help seti find life, etc then I could see some more RAM to help, but can not think of a reason why anyone would spend $114k in a $700 computer , unless they had shared video RAM then...Naw never mind still wouldn't make sense.

    1) You are looking at ECC ram, which is mainly for servers.
    2) You can buy 1 gig of ram for about $80 (give or take $10).
    3) As of right now, 2 gigs of ram is optimal for games such as BF2.

Hint: Never buy ram from an OEM. OEM = Dell, Gw2k, IBM, HP, Compaq.

Well no one ever said what kind of RAM or for what machine, or what use so I tried to cover the best case, still even at the prices you gave it is still $11,520 which is a group where I come from! And the point you make about 2gb being enough is exactly the point I was trying to make. Just wondering what that Motherboard looks like that takes 128gb of RAM, Must have it's own Air Conditioner, isle after isle of RAM cards, the power supply is in the next room, Wow! then to boot it up your still depending on a floppy drive that hasn't changed in the last 20 years, hehehehe but the up side is you could warm up a sandwich on the banks of RAM and get rid of the microwave and buy even more ram... Sorry guys got carreid away there!

Kinda funny to go back and read now, I have since bought a Server as my home computer and one of the upgrades is another 2 gigs of RAM, bringing it up to 4gb. Now I have to admit that I got a great deal on the RAM $25 for 256x8 EEC RAM, and yes the RAM board in this thing is bigger then some of the computers I have seen and is bigger then my laptop! But I also am running Windows 2003 and Vista 5536 Dual Boot, and I know Vista loves the RAM!
