A new year has arrived, so I decided to update the top freeware picks and am asking for your opinions. I have at least 6 I need to add to the list and want to be sure I cover it. Let me know what programs you think should be added:

Thanks, added that. Good to know what the geeks like, we have been adding a lot over past few months, I have added a couple others too including one of my new favorites, myfairtunes, a DRM removal tool.

Still interested in any others you like..

Thanks again, especially bigbazza for just now piling hours of work on my desk ;) Appreciate all suggestions, I have added a handful, plus a new category and will be working on it during the day today as well.

I can see the thought and time you've put into this - welldone!
I'd only add Hostsmanager (offered here), due to my recent debacle and recovery.
I sure do use and like NLite, PowerIso, WinRAR, and DBPoweramp almost every day - but maybe that's all personal pref.
Anyway, the "extra hours of work" that you do every day for all of us are appreciated!
    LONG LIVE THE GEEK!:major

Ah well, you did ask. :D :major

As you no doubt have already noted, half of the suggested programs already have MG download links.

As for the other half, I hope you are able to track down the original author as "we" don't want to plug other competing download links. ;)

Even if you are able to establish a link to Author's site only, I think some of the suggested programs would be well received by MG members and browsers. All the best in your quest. :major

Since I found Major Geeks, I have made use of the Top Freeware list - it's suggestions meet all of my needs, and I have nothing to add.

Except . . . there doesn't seem to be a suggestion for file encryption. I've been using this program for a couple of years:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Security_Toolkit_d4849.html

I create a password protected virtual drive on which I can store my sensitive files (tax records, budget spreadsheets, etc.) and it has performed without flaw. I even put simple files in this virtual drive - family photos, personal letters, my training files for work - anything I wouldn't want a thief who may steal my desktop looking at - regardless if it has monetary value to said thief or not. I really don't want some nameless thug looking over my latest family Christmas photos . . .

The cool thing about this program is you can leave the drive mounted, and it acts like a seperate drive. But if you should shut down the PC, it doesn't remount when booted back up. It offers several methods of encryption, and it is possible to encrypt DVD's and CD's for archive purposes. It has other functions, as well. It seems pretty solid in operation - I've never had a problem with it.

The only problem with this program seems to be the company that put it out has vanished or has renamed itself. I'm not a software designer, so I don't really know how secure this program is now.

    Just a thought.

2 of the programs (so far) that I suggested to MA for inclusion in the Must Have Free Downloads listing have made it to the front page at www.majorgeeks.com today. :cool

Bazza's note: Originally suggested to me by Halo. Thanks again, Halo. Great for Dual core (or now 4 core) CPU program handling.

    Both Essentials for my PC.

Nice to see that new program. I spent a lot of time in the past running down the old "Set Affinity" program....& found it.

Speaking of that: maybe, it would be a good idea to give an explanation below the old Reg Cleaner program and let users know they have to set affinity for it to run properly on PCs w/multiple processors. < A little of topic...but not much :).

Its more an after thought tagger Bazza, than an on the fly one that rips and tags, actually if you signup to iTunes ( credit card needed sadly ) iTunes will tag and add cd cover.

But I cheapskate and dont mind tagging manually with MP3Tag, its pretty good IMO.

Does it burn CD's to MP3's? I'm :confused Bazza

PS: just read your reply after I posted my last question. I'm not interested in iTunes, so would appreciate any other CD ripper program that you or other MG'ers can suggest. Thanks. Bazza

This one should fit your criteria Bazza http://www.majorgeeks.com/MediaMonkey_d4907.html and already listed in the Top Freeware Picks ( I dont use this one as it doesnt support my iPod Touch, so sadly I'm linked with iTunes for now, but use MP3Tag for tagging, mainly album art )

    Another vote for MP3tag :)

@Bazza - Audiograbber is another great app for backing up cd's to mp3 etc, it also includes a tagger :)

Looking through these and some email now, lot of new items, added descriptions to some section that needed it. Obviously malware, rootkits, anti-virus are borderline no brainers, but office tools, graphics, multimedia all do different things, so hoefully adding a few words to each will help.

Also, someone suggested I add a pick to our picks, I considered it but these are all so excellent, it does not seem fair to do.

This is slightly off- topic, but would it be possible to put a link to Top Freeware Picks at the bottom of the page with all the other links?

One of my all time favorite tools has been Mp3tag... however....

Lately the versions I have downloaded from Major Geeks seem to end up infecting me with the vundo trojan, which is rather annoying and difficult to remove.

It's not the software, it's what you're downloading from the net infecting you.

    Hi

As Cat mentions that application is fine, likely you gained Vundo from somewhere else, I just downloaded it again and installed on a spare PC and then did some malware scans as per our READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide ( admittidly I only downloaded from the FL, TX links ) but the application hosted on each mirror server will be same one.

I would be tempted to run the guide I linked to earlier and post a new thread in the Malware forum, with requested logs attached.

The latest version of Mp3tag I downloaded multiple times from Majorgeeks, although I did not pay attention to the link which was chosen. I became suspicious after Malwarebytes found connections between the software and vundo on several of my machines. Avg antivirus and Bitdefender as well as some other programs did not detect vundo.
I did not expect finding the culprit to be so obvious and really was not expecting to find vundo so directly related to Mp3tag which I have used for years. I several times downloaded the file from Majorgeeks over the past few weeks. I was thinking that vundo probably attached itself to the program after it was installed on my machines and was distressed to discover that the newly downloaded files tested positive by Malwarebytes for vundo before they were opened, and immediatly after the download. I have since completely removed the program from all of my computers until the issue can be resolved. One unfortunate and persistently annoying aspect of the experience continues. It would appear that even deleting the software appears to start a continuing spiral of requests to alter certain registry settings, specifically .reg (%1%) or (%1%*) and .scr as Name or Company Name (%1 /s) or (%1%*). Needless to say this is quite annoying, a sort of unstoppable circle and is enough to burn my links with mp3tag forever.

You really need to go through the Read and Run Me First thread that Halo linked you to in the post above yours. As he said, he tested the links and found them to be clean. If you check the Malware forum, you will find that Vundo is hard to get rid of and what is happening is probably that the software you are using to do so is not fully removing it. It's just going to to keep coming back.

Hi dont know what to say but I ran Malwarebytes and the full scan first on the two main HDs on my system, C: Drive which will have the installed files from MP3tag and the D: Drive which has the main installer file downloaded from Majorgeeks on it and also copied the main exe for MP3tag to my C: Drive desktop and scanned again and nothing found.

I would run the guide I posted and start a new thread in Malware forum.

Also make sure your running latest version and definition database for Malwarebytes

as false positives are not out of the question but with above database file its not showing Vundo on my PC or in MP3Tags file/s.
