Hi, I am more of a gamer than a computer whizz and have a query about an mmorpg that I enjoy, the game is called metin2 and in a recent update has installed a torrent patch, as far as I am aware this is to relieve the stress on the main server but I am not sure, the torrent is optional but loads automatically, however can be disabled when the game is running. so here are my questions.

What are the benefits of this type of system?
Are there any extra dangers to my system?
If many people decide to turn off the torrent and leech will this create problems such as lag and disconnection?

If any one could take the time to answer these questions I would be grateful as there seems to be a bit of an uproar in the community and maybe some misinformation.

The benefits of torrenting but the risks are still there. The benefits of torrenting is that it isd a peer to peer system. Instead of 90,000 people getting the patch from one server eventually clogging the server up. The patch is gained from many sources in the community fellow end users such as yourself. This is nice because if person 1052 goes offline theres 30 or more who will continue to seed you the file.

Torrents have Swarms (pools of leechers and seeders) Seeders (people who have the whole file) and Leechers (people with one or more file fragments) make their part of the download available. Your client will then pick the best connections and attempt to download from them first and the rest are thrown into the Swarm most clients will try to use the best connections for the largest file chunks if at all possible once your client has the whole file the fragments are then assembled into a coherent whole and you yourself become a Seeder. You can even seed as a leecher, file fragments this is all done automatically.

However torrents have risks. Because your opening a direct connection to and from your computer your vulnerable to all manners of malware and hackers. Before torrenting make sure you have a tough, competent package of anti viral, spyware, and firewall protection going.

People turning off the torrent won't create lag in game, unless the patch itself contains a flaw as such. But what it will do is keep you from getting the whole file as there will be no one to get the file from.
